What are the responsibilities and job description for the Timber Scaler position at Alutiiq?
This position will work closely with our Senior Forestry staff and report to the VP of Lands & Natural Resources. The Timber Scaler will be responsible for examining cut timber in a log yard on Afognak Island.
- Measure cut trees to determine the scale (volume) and quality (grade) of the wood
- Accurately mark and understand log grade marks
- Evaluate log characteristics to determine grades
- Identify logs of substandard or special grade to be regraded, recut or used for other processing
- Inspect logs to ascertain characteristics or defects such as water damage, splits, knots, broken ends, rotten areas, etc.
- Accurately read scale rule
- Determine any deductions/defects of a log
- Efficiently operate and input log data into handheld device
- Download handheld device daily
- Weigh log trucks (before and after unloading) to determine and record load weights
- Accurate documentation of all loads
- Travel as needed
- All other duties as Assigned
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
- 15 years of experience as a Timber Scaler
- HS Diploma or Equivalent
- Experience utilizing log scaling software, program, equipment, and tools
- Read and write proficiently.
- Excellent hand / eye coordination
- Attention to detail.
- Good depth perception
- Good organizational skills
- Additional training as required.
Salary : $51,900 - $65,700
