POSITION OVERVIEW AND PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS):
Position Overview:
The Water Treatment Plant Operator performs duties related to the operation of water treatment facilities. Monitors equipment, gauges and charts and records data related to water quality to ensure water is properly treated before releasing it into the potable water sytem. Keeps supervisor apprised of unique situations and problems encountered and identifies and reports safety, environmental and other work requirements for resolution.
Primary/Major Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions):
Controls water treatment plant and equipment to treat water for human consumption and industrial use.
Operates and controls electric motors, pumps and valves that regulate flow into the water plant for treatment.
Controls specific amounts of chemicals to stabilize and disinfect the water prior to distribution.
Chemical additions are, Phosphoric acid (PO4), liquid bleach (chlorine), Caustic soda (pH) control, and fluoride.
Regulates well pump flow through each of the Granulated Activated Carbon (GAC) reactors; pumps treated water into the water distribution system; adjusts controls for flow rates and line pressure and; monitors electronic panels and the SCADA computer terminal.
Tests water, adjusts chemicals to maintain appropriate levels, and maintains records in compliance with Navy policies/procedures and the Florida Department of Environmental Regulations.
Must be familiar with and have the ability to calibrate associated test monitoring analyzers and be able to operate machinery and equipment associated with water treatment plant functions (i.e., air blowers, auxiliary generators, fire hydrants, reservoirs, etc.).
Complies with all OSHA safety regulations and adhere to proper codes and standards with a thorough understanding of safety procedures and Lock out/Tag out Procedures.
Utilizes Safety Data Sheets to identify chemical characteristics.
Completes Work Orders daily and accurately.
Initiates material requisitions to order parts/materials needed for repairs.
Assists with material and labor estimates.
Work also involves other duties as assigned, including compliance with the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and Employee Handbook.
Operates motor vehicles in accordance with company vehicle policies.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
Must possess a State of Florida Class C or higher Water Treatment Plant Operator license.
Minimum five (5) years experience as a water plant operator.
High School diploma or equivalency.
Valid state driver's license, acceptable driving record, and proof of valid insurance.
Must be available to work other shifts as directed, to include weekends and holidays.
Maintain all necessary licenses/IDs/certifications.
Ability to solve problems and work independently with minimal supervision.
Ability to adapt to changes in technology and applicable facility/infrastructure codes and standards.
Ability to deal with a variety of people in a professional and courteous manner in diverse situations.
Basic computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office applications.
Proficiency and knowledge of a variety of hand and power tools.
Demonstrated working ability to read, write, speak and understand English.
