Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater is hailed as “cultural ambassador to the world” by the U.S. Congress and is renowned for its stellar performances, high-caliber dance training, and innovative educational initiatives which reach nearly 500,000 people around the globe each year. Robert Battle, Artistic Director, continues the pioneering work of Alvin Ailey and furthers the development of a cultural community which provides dance performances, training, and community programs for all people.
AileyCamp Newark is a fun-filled six-week summer day camp where young people ages 11-14 learn to dance and explore their creativity. The program helps youth develop their self-confidence in an atmosphere of warmth, respect and trust. Campers take dance classes from experienced teaching artists in popular styles such as West African, jazz, ballet and the Lester Horton technique (which is the basis of many of Alvin Ailey’s works). Campers also participate in workshops to build leadership and communication skills and attend field trips. AileyCamp Newark takes place from June 26 - August 3, 2023.
Responsibilities for the Personal Development Instructor include:
Teach 1-4 Personal Development classes per day, Monday - Friday, between the hours of 8:30 am – 3:30 pm.
Participate in lunch duty, seminars, and general supervision of campers when not teaching a class.
Prepare a Personal Development production for the final camp presentation, in consultation with the AileyCamp Newark Co-Directors and other faculty.
Participate in field trip activities when the regular curriculum is not scheduled.
Participate in all rehearsal, preparation, and day-of final performance activities at NJPAC on Wednesday, August 2nd.
Participate in regularly scheduled staff meetings and individual meetings with the AileyCamp Newark Co-Directors.
Provide the AileyCamp Newark Co-Directors with a written evaluation of student's progress.
Provide the AileyCamp Newark Co-Directors with a schedule of proposed class content.
Attend a mandatory staff orientation.
Dress in the AileyCamp staff uniform.
The Personal Development Instructor will be supervised by the AileyCamp Newark Co-Directors. The Personal Development Instructor will be required to participate in a background check, including but not limited to federal and sex offender checks, fingerprinting, and courses required for certification.
