The Amazon Devices team designs high-profile consumer electronics, including the quintessential Amazon Echo, FireTV, Fire Tablets, Kindle and Amazon Astro family of products. We are looking for a motivated individual contributor with solid communication skills and the breadth of knowledge to be able to drive architectures that further sustainability for Amazon devices.
Key job responsibilities
The Role:
As the Energy Systems Engineer, you will be responsible for defining architectures and models that drive sustainability goals for consumer products such as Echo and FireTV. Energy consumption is a key focus for this role and you will be involved in definition of Low Power Mode architecture as well as own and deliver the energy model. In the process, you will drive key decisions such as energy state machine definition and strategies to improve the energy and carbon footprint of our devices. You will work on product concepts that may have an existing reference architecture as well as emerging product ideas that do not have any precedence. As the product is developed from initial concept, prototype development, validation to production you stay engaged as the sustainability architecture lead to ensure the requirements are being met. Throughout this process you work closely with multi-disciplinary groups including Program Management, Sustainability science, System architecture, Power Engineers and Software Engineering.
Besides direct product architecture tasks, you will track market trends, interface directly with relevant vendors, and define roadmaps on the next generation architecture investments that drive sustainability. The Energy engineer will be curious to learn and drive long-term sustainability initiatives that improve the carbon footprint of our devices.
You are a hands-on engineer who is close to the details and validates your architecture assumptions through profiling and benchmarking on available platforms. A required part of the role is to measure power and energy consumption in the lab, while putting devices into know use-cases and energy states. As part of technology development, you contribute towards developing IP and filing patents.
A day in the life
In this role, you will:
• Gather product sustainability requirements from external/internal customers, and translate these requirements into architectures that are robust, scalable and supportable
• Perform architecture feasibility analysis, including profiling, benchmarking and prototyping new features (with the larger team) on available platforms.
• Present architecture tradeoffs and recommendations to senior management (Director/VP level)
• Provide design and validation reviews for other engineers, including feedback on architecture and design issues, as well as integration, performance and scalability.
• Drive technology roadmaps in areas of expertise to foster innovation and meet the needs of the long term product roadmap.
• Work closely with component suppliers and influence their roadmaps to meet Amazon Lab126 needs.
About the team
The system architecture, power and platform team is at the forefront of architecting Amazon Lab126 products including Echo, Fire Tablets, FireTV, Kindle eReaders, Astro home robots, Hearables, Wearables and IoT. The team’s work is key to the climate pledge as it drives architectures that scaled for reuse across Amazon devices.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field, with 3 years of full time industry experience (PhDs in directly relevant field with no industry experience welcome to apply)
- Expertise in at least two of the following areas: Power modeling and management, energy modeling and testing, SOC architecture, software optimization.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Master’s degree
- 5 years of industry experience
- Experience in driving design decisions for consumer electronics devices
- Experience with Matlab and Python
- Hands-on in either software development for prototyping (Python, C/C , Java, etc.) or hardware development (System C, RTL design, FPGA design)
- Lab measurements using DAQ systems, Oscilloscopes, DC Analyzers, programmable DC supplies, etc.
- Strong communication skills & ability to clearly document technical design

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $93,900/year in our lowest geographic market up to $185,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
