Summary Description: The Development Manager – Major & Planned Giving will help manage AAUW’s relationships with major and planned giving donors, Branch and affiliate leaders and alumnae. This position is part of a team that is poised to retain and expand the AAUW community and will provide opportunities for creativity and innovation in soliciting and stewarding donors and enhancing Branch and affiliate member fundraising, recruitment and retention activities. The Development Manager will assist with the development, coordination, and implementation of training and resources for AAUW branches and affiliates. The position will also provide additional administrative and customer care support as needed in other areas of Advancement. The ideal candidate must be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, have excellent interpersonal and writing skills, a keen attention to detail and bring creative ideas to the position.
Essential Duties:
Donor and Membership Engagement and Stewardship
  • Manage the development and execution of materials, events, and communications (virtual and in-person) related to AAUW’s donor and member recognition and incentive programs including but not limited to the 5 Star Program, Legacy Circle and Champions for Women and Girls.
  • Lead the Advancement team’s responses to inquiries and issues related to AAUW donor and member recognition and incentive programs.
  • Oversee the tracking and updating of affiliate submissions for recognition, as well as new and existing member and donor recognition programs and societies, ensuring AAUW is meeting all individual and affiliate recognition deliverables in a timely and consistent manner.
  • Collaborate with AAUW Communications staff to further steward, engage and inform members and donors about Advancement campaigns and organization-wide initiatives.
  • Provide support to the National AAUW Advancement Committee and Legacy Circle Team, as needed, to ensure their projects and tasks are on track; monitors and reports on progress toward goals.
  • Coordinate the production and development of content for the Advancement e-newsletters, fundraising reports, and other marketing collateral as needed.
Fundraising Leader and Volunteer Relations
  • Administer the tracking and implementation of the major gift, planned giving and affiliate “moves management” strategies and activities to increase support.
  • Support the strategic planning and implementation of the AAUW donor, member, branch and state recognition and incentive programs.
  • Conduct research and prepare briefing reports and materials for donor and prospect meetings.
  • Create and update educational resources and tools for AAUW fundraising leaders.
Gift Administration and Direct Fundraising
  • Manage a small portfolio of individual and branch prospects and donors. Cultivate and solicit prospective donors in support of the Advancement Team’s major, planned and branch fundraising goals.
  • Provide support to the Advancement Senior Manager for individual, branch and affiliate giving administration, including but not limited to tracking and reporting of gifts and proposals (major, planned and branch), communication with finance staff to ensure donor intent aligns with final revenue and expense allocations, and assisting with customized acknowledgments and stewardship.
  • Research donor prospects through the use of a wealth screening database.
  • Create and update major giving, planned giving and advancement resource webpages and webinars/presentations for targeted audiences.
  • Manage the acknowledgement letter process in partnership with the Advancement Associate, to ensure letters are accurate, customized and delivered in a timely manner.

  • Promote AAUW’s culture and values, in particular AAUW’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and an active commitment to AAUW’s mission.
  • Develop close partnerships with AAUW departments and teams towards the collaborative implementation of projects.
  • Maintain an awareness of current market conditions, philanthropic trends, and other factors that might affect individual donors, members and affiliates.
  • Other administrative duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • At least 2-4 years of progressive experience in development—institutional fundraising or engagement experience preferred—or an equivalent combination of training and relevant experience.
  • Takes initiative, does not hesitate to ask questions, demonstrates creativity and flexibility, and contributes to brainstorming sessions.
  • Knowledge of member/volunteer recruitment and retention a plus.
  • A commitment to women’s leadership and women’s equity issues.
  • Experience with common social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn).
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Recognizes problems and can independently analyze/formulate solutions.
  • Commitment to customer/member service and strong interpersonal skills with diverse audiences.
  • Excellent interpersonal, presentation, writing, and proposal development skills.
  • Attention to detail; significant organizational and other project management skills required.
  • CRM or other database experience. Prior experience with Salesforce preferred.
  • Highly proficient in Zoom, Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint.
  • Experience developing and implementing online events and webinars.
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a commitment to inclusion and equity.
  • Clear understanding and commitment to AAUW mission, goals and objectives.
  • Knowledge of and strong commitment to generally accepted fundraising policies, standards, and values, as well as the AFP Code of Ethics.
