SPRINGFIELD, IL

American Environmental Corporation is seeking an Environmental Professional to work full-time in its Springfield, Illinois office. This person would work on environmental projects that largely involve: emergency management planning, risk assessment, regulatory assistance, and technical writing. This person would conduct work with staff in the office and interact with government officials in the field, largely in public meetings, and all field work would be conducted in Illinois. Field work comprises approximately one to three days per month.

Primary environmental projects and associated responsibilities include the following:

Natural Hazard Mitigation Plans (NHMP)—Assist with preparing NHMPs for the Illinois Emergency Management Agency and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Assist in the preparation of grant applications and administrative paperwork such as quarterly reports, performing public involvement duties related to Planning Committee meetings and conducting risk assessment and vulnerability analysis. Assist local government officials with completing documents and developing their lists of projects aimed at reducing damages caused by natural hazards. Also assist with intergovernmental coordination between state, county, and municipal government officials and other public sector entities such as schools, health care facilities, and emergency responders.

Commodity Flow Studies (CFS)—Assist with studies to identify the types and relative quantities of chemical transportation on highways and railroads along with the preparation of a risk assessment/vulnerability analysis that describes the relative risk to community resources—water supplies, government services, health care facilities, and schools among others. Prepare recommendations on how county and municipalities can better protect infrastructure and public health from accidents involving chemical transport. Assist in providing grant application and quarterly report information needed by County EMA/ESDA Coordinators.

Regulatory Compliance & Assistance—Assist staff with various technical and administrative issues involving environmental regulations and special projects. One of these special projects involves a pioneering environmental initiative to improve air quality in several municipalities in northern Illinois which has achieved local, state and national recognition for its success.

Environmental regulatory compliance involves helping to submit required environmental reports to the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for private sector clients.
