Job Description
American Express is seeking an Engineer to develop and enhance critical observability tools based upon in-depth knowledge of enterprise and performance monitoring concepts. This person will work with teams across Leadership, Technology, and the Business to develop observability and reporting capabilities for critical functions within the American Express ecosystem. A successful candidate for this role will have a strong desire to learn, adapt and provide thought leadership in this ever-evolving environment.
Responsibilities
The responsibilities for this role may include but are not limited to:
- Software Development - Function as member of an agile team by contributing to software builds through consistent development practices (tools, common components, and documentation).
- Participate in code reviews and automated testing
- Debug basic software components and identify code defects for remediation
- Enable the deployment, support, and monitoring of software across test, integration, and production environments - CI/CD and automated deployments in test or production environments
- Automatically scale applications based on demand projections
- Leadership- Demonstrate increased self-reliance to achieve team goals
- Influence team members with creative changes and improvements by challenging status quo and demonstrating risk taking

Qualifications
- Proven ability to understand complex environments and data flows to Design (with an eye to future enhancements), Develop, Implement and Support Tools
- 3-6 years’ experience in design and development of monitoring and reporting tools including:- Strong and proven Splunk knowledge and skills including complex queries to correlate multiple data sources.
- Dashboard development and optimization using JavaScript, HTML, jQuery, simple XML, Post-process queries
- Experience with creating Custom Alert Actions and Custom Search Commands
- Experience working Splunk MLTK and Splunk DB connect.
- Experience with Data onboarding and maintenance of forwarder agents/custom logic across Windows/Linux.
- Event Ingestion – HEC, Universal Forwarder installation and configuration, event formatting at the source, Event Parsing - Experience in design and development of Python.
- JIRA experience a plus.
- Exposure to Kafka or other data streaming platforms.
- Exposure to Docker and Kubernetes.
- Proven analytical and troubleshooting skills.
- Experience adapting new technologies to the role either in support of or integration with Splunk or, other required or potential capabilities such as Automation or Machine Learning
- Mid-level understanding of basic networking – TCP/IP, routing, load balancing, firewalls etc.
- Excellent soft skills including: Listening, Self-Control, Positivity, Assertiveness, Conflict Resolution, Empathy, Depersonalization & Taking Responsibility
- Proficient at Agile principles and practices, always considering scaling across Teams/organization and taking an innovation driven approach to delivering business value
Salary Range: $85,000.00 to $150,000.00 annually bonus benefits
