Service to the Armed Forces Volunteer Coordinator – AmeriCorps VISTA Member
This is a paid volunteer position through AmeriCorps VISTA serving with the American Red Cross.
Position Description
The VISTA will recruit volunteers while seeking to build the volunteer capacity, program effectiveness and ongoing coordination of the Service to the Armed Forces (SAF) Program. The VISTA member will recruit, onboard, engage, and manage the development of volunteers throughout the SAF lines of service in West Virginia. Red Cross SAF members address family communication with US Military members and create awareness for veterans regarding VA benefits, among other programs. The VISTA will also build a strong network of community partners and resources to better serve our veteran populations.
This position is for our location in Charleston, WV between Spring 2022 and Spring 2023. There are also openings in Huntington, Morgantown, and Beckley, and Wheeling, WV.
Responsibilities
- Identify and implement effective recruitment strategies.
- Onboard, engage, and manage the development of volunteers throughout the SAF program.
- Establish a strong SAF Program to ensure effective service delivery per Red Cross policies and procedures.
- Facilitate presentations to increase volunteer capacity and Red Cross visibility within service areas.
- Make connections with individuals and volunteers in the community and at VA Medical Centers for program outreach and enhancement.
- Support staff and volunteers in duties as appropriate and necessary.
Requirements
- Essential competencies include writing proficiency, relationship management, public speaking, robust communication skills, ability to lead teams of people toward a common goal, strong computer skills including aptitude in Microsoft Office Suite.
- One-year commitment with the organization’s option to continue for four years.
- AmeriCorps VISTA Member are expected to work 38 hours a week and participate in training, activities and events related to job responsibilities. Position may require some evening and weekend commitments as well as some travel.
Members are required to:
o Have a High School Diploma, or equivalent.
o Be at least 18 years of age at the start of the program.
o Have a current valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.
o Is a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States.
o Satisfy National Service Criminal History Check eligibility criteria, including state and national sex offender registry checks, state criminal history checks, FBI criminal history checks, and state Child Abuse/Neglect Registry checks.

- Bi-weekly living allowance totaling $14,960 a year based on a 38-hour work week.

- Receive an End of Service Award for a Segal Education Award (valued at approximately $6,000) to pay for a range of education expenses or a $1,800 cash stipend.

COVID-19 considerations:
In response to COVID-19, AmeriCorps VISTA positions are temporarily work from home. VISTAs will be asked to work out of the American Red Cross offices once given the all-clear from their supervisor.
