Job Overview
The role of the archivist is to identify and select which materials should be kept in the archive or be destroyed, manage, catalogue, and maintain the resources, and provide access to the materials in the Center for the History of Microbiology / ASM Archives (CHOMA). These materials relate to the history of the Society and of the science.

Collaborate with & Support ASM Business Units
Essential Functions (defines the critical end results expected of the jobholder related to the accountabilities above)

Facilitate acquisition, preservation, arrangement, description and access to physical and digital resources for researchers and historians

Collaborate with business units and volunteers to provide information that builds value and engagement into member programs and services

Coordinate facility tours, lectures, classes and workshops for interested researchers
-
Manage appraisal of archive materials upon request
-
Review applications for travel grants to assist researchers in traveling to CHOMA to use the collections; work with the awardees in planning and conducting their research

Assist in the creation of commemorative plaques and other materials for the Milestones in Microbiology Program.

Draft articles, and social media posts for showing the value of the collection

Archive materials and produce effective resources for display and researchers

Negotiate information requests to clarify historical documents, context and purpose.

Select, create and display exhibit materials with clear and concise caption text
-

Physical Demands
This is largely an active role but may sit or use PC for periods of time. Regular pushing, pulling and lifting of up to 20 pounds is required. Additional pushing, pulling and lifting of up to 50 pounds may be required. Bending, reaching or stooping may be necessary for use of filing cabinets or other office cabinets or office machines. This job operates mainly in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computer, phones, copiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. Other office equipment such as binding machines may be used as well.
