22-23 Forterra, Stewardship Associate
Forterra drives land-based solutions in Washington to support a healthy environment and resilient communities for all. Based in Seattle, Washington, we are the state of Washington’s largest land conservation, stewardship and community building organization dedicated solely to the region. Our restoration and stewardship programs are dedicated to restoring and caring for healthy forest, natural areas and watersheds that are important to our regions sustainability and quality of life. These important natural systems provide storm water retention, reduce erosion, improve air quality, buffer noise, and capture carbon dioxide and pollutants from the air. Perhaps most importantly, they help establish a profound connection between people and place, and foster an appreciation for nature both within and beyond our cities. The AmeriCorps members will support three Forterra programs. 1) Green City Partnerships: A collaboration of 14 cities dedicated to creating a livable city with healthy urban forest. The Green Cities are working in partnership with Forterra, local restoration crews, organizations and volunteers to restore 13,000 acres for urban forested parks and natural areas. 2) Riparian Restoration Program: A successful watershed approach restore and enhance salmon habitat and water quality along our local rivers. This innovative program provides technical assistance and on the ground restoration support to restore private and public properties along priority rivers systems. 3) Forterra Lands: Forterra oversees the management of over 14,000 acres of diverse landscapes that we own or hold easements on. Forterra stewards the lands we own monitors our conservation easements annually.
Member Duties : The AmeriCorps member’s essential function is to support the Restoration and Stewardship programs. The Americorps members provide logistical and leadership support for volunteer work parties including tool management, ordering materials, leading groups of volunteers in restoration projects, clean up and restocking of materials, entering data into a database and following up with volunteers. This position assists with volunteer recruitment, social media, outreach events and educational opportunities, such as games, trainings, and interpretive walks. The Stewardship Associate assists with monitoring and restoration of various project. This includes preparing field visit materials, accompanying the staff on site visits, and follow up reporting, documentation and communication to landowners. The Stewardship Associate also helps with restoration planning and logistics for specific projects by ordering materials, tracking restoration and monitoring success of restoration efforts.
