Responsibilities as Assistant Arborist at Anakeesta include, but are not limited to, developing skills with tree climbing, frequent chainsaw use, plant care, tree inventory, tree removal, advanced rigging, hazard tree assessment, and tree care in a formal landscape. Arborist Assistant will work directly with the staff Arborist who will mentor them through a variety of job experiences associated with managing a mix of natural forest, urban forest, and formal landscape that comprises the Anakeesta property
Qualifications/Requirements
- Academic background in urban forestry, ecology, horticulture, arboriculture, or a related field (preferred)
- Should have good tree identification skills (a plus)
- Ability to walk over rough steep terrain on mountain sides
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
- Ability to lift and move brush and sections of wood on uneven terrain
- Written and verbal communication skills are essential,
- Possession of valid driver’s license
- Self-motivation and the ability to work independently
- Basic tree climbing skills with rope and harness or ability to learn
- Basic safe chainsaw operation or ability/willingness to learn
- Ability to work at heights on tree platforms, ride zip lines, and work while in a rope harness system
- Should be able to safely operate or learn to operate an ATV, or side by side ATV
- Ability to safely operate a Skid steer a plus but not required
Duties and Responsibilities
- Participate in management and fieldwork activities including tree identification, tree inventory, and visual assessment of trees in urban and natural forest settings
- Assist in planting seedlings, managing fire damaged forest, and planning reforestation for fire damaged areas
- Assist in removing and felling hazard trees employing advanced rigging techniques
- Use basic knots to tie off and lower pruned branches or assist in such operations
- Climb trees upwards of 90 feet to do routine pruning around adventure elements
- Operate and maintain rope systems, chainsaws, and all other equipment safely
- Learn about and practice tree and other natural resource management in an adventure park wilderness/urban environment
- Ability to interact on a limited basis with guests at Anakeesta with courtesy and respect
- Perform additional duties as requested
- Work Monday through Friday with ability to respond to tree emergencies outside of normal hours.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $16.00 - $19.00 per hour
