The responsibilities of this position are to fulfill the needs of a Security Officer, capable of working in the Patrol or Dispatch Division. Primary responsibilities will be Patrol and secondary responsibilities will be Dispatch. This position is considered an essential employee and will be responsible to work a shift schedule that can include; working during a section of a 24 hour day, working weekends and holidays, including during Sabbath hours.

Qualifications summary

To perform this job successfully, an individual must have or be capable of obtaining; law enforcement type certifications (Reserve Police Academy or higher, PPCT, Reid, ICS, etc.) dispatch type (ACPO, etc.), as well as general safety training (CPR/First Aid or other assigned by the office). Additionally they must be proficient in computer skills and have excellent customer service skills. See full posting for further detail.

Duties and responsibilities

Patrol Division

  • Coordinates with local fire and law enforcement personnel for their response to the campus, assisting them with the performance of their duties.

  • Crowd control/management for graduation event or special events.

  • Ensures all campus buildings are secured and cleared of non-authorized individuals on a daily basis per the individual department schedule.

  • Ensures proper recording, accuracy, safekeeping, and follow through of all investigative matters assigned.

  • Ensures operational readiness through inventory and maintenance of supplies and equipment.

  • Investigates all matters reported to the Office of Campus Safety, which could include burglaries, auto theft, vehicles accidents, lost and found property, fights, and or any other criminal matter or reported/referred code of conduction violations which occurs on campus.

  • Enforces parking/driving regulations through the issuing of citations and arrangements/decisions to immobilize/or tow vehicles.

  • Learns and enforces Standard Operating Procedures, Student Code of Conduct and general University policy.

  • Operates University vehicles during all weather conditions, including inclement weather.

  • Patrols the campus grounds and buildings by foot and vehicle for the intent of deterring crime on campus, identifying and responding to suspicious situations/individuals and hazardous environments.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Provides service assistance calls to the campus community which may consist of escorts, jumpstarts, vehicle lock-outs, etc.

  • Provides financial escorts, providing for the safety/transport of the escorted or directly responsible for the safety/transport of monetary funds to and from off campus.

  • Reports in proper attire and is fit for duty for a minimum of ten minutes prior to shift start.

  • Reports maintenance problems and submits work orders to their supervisor who refers/or contacts the department responsible for mitigation.

  • Responds to all emergency calls on campus.

  • Responds to any disturbance, fight or domestic disputes reported on campus.

  • Responds to fire and security alarms.

  • Responsible for the proper care and maintenance of uniform and equipment, vehicle, radio, keys, etc.

  • Must obtain/maintain certification in Ground Avoidance Ground Escape.

  • Must obtain/maintain certification in Pressure Point Control Tactics.

  • Must obtain/maintain certification in the deployment and use of Olerin Capsicum Aerosol.


Dispatch Division

  • A working knowledge of communications equipment.

  • Ability to rely on experience, training and judgment to execute policies and procedures.

  • Ability to work cohesively in a team oriented environment.

  • Advance communication and customer service skills with the faculty, staff, students, community visitors and emergency response agencies over the telephone and in person to resolve conflicts or respond to emergency incidents.

  • Advanced proficiency in English speaking and writing skills.

  • Computer proficient in Microsoft Office Professional and Excel.

  • Exceptional skill in time management.

  • Must be able to perform with limited direct supervision.

  • ORACLE database experience preferred.


Supervisory responsibilities

While the individual does not have supervisory responsibilities internally within the office, as the on-duty officer, they do represent the University and policies to anyone accessing the campus. They must be capable of:

  • Clearly communicating University expectations

  • Discernment and making appropriate, situational based decisions following policy and guidance.

  • Making emergency decisions for the campus when chain of command is not present (such as initiating directions to lockdown, or shelter in place for a tornado, etc.)

  • Computer proficient in Microsoft Office including Outlook and Excel.

  • Exceptional skill in time management/self-management.

  • Experience within a law enforcement or military preferred.

  • Maintain certifications in CPR, First Aid and AED.

  • Must be able to complete a formal law enforcement training academy (BCSD Reserve Officer Training Academy accepted)

  • Must be able to work shift assignments.

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.

  • Must function well while under stress.

  • Must have excellent human relation skills, dealing with a wide variety of people.

  • Must have or obtain a valid Michigan driver’s license.

  • Must have or obtain at least APCO Public Safety Telecommunicator certification.

Through these interactions employees are required to enforce University policies through verbal direction, public education, or other enforcement. This can include interacting with individuals who may be suspected of committing a criminal act and/or violation of University policy.

  • Where feasible, initially working towards resolution through understanding and reserving University authority as a secondary tool.


Physical demands

While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee is regularly required to use other senses to talk, hear, taste, and/or smell. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is regularly required to sit, stand, jump, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Employee will also be required to work in/be exposed to, all weather conditions associated with the State of Michigan.

While it is impossible to predict all situations that someone might encounter while performing their duties, it is understood, that employees are expected to conduct security patrols at all hours of the day and night, during many different types of weather conditions. During these common activities an employee might be confronted with potentially dangerous situations associated with security type work.


In the completion of these activities an employee will have acecss to a patrol vehicle and office.


While completing these duties, the employee will be walking through campus grounds including sidewalks, parkinglots, roadways, grass areas, and wooded trails. The employee will also be accessing buildings, from common spaces to classrooms, labs, mechanical/electrical rooms, residential spaces, roof-tops, or any other area belonging to the University.
