Job Description

The purpose of the Marketing BU is to sustainably maximise cash flows from the marketing of Anglo American products and services. In support of this, we have set ourselves a target to deliver a considerable uplift in Value by 2023.

The Coal Trading team as part of Energy Solutions has a global footprint with team members situated in offices in Johannesburg, London, Brisbane, and Singapore. The team is accountable for the marketing and sales of ~25Mtpa of coal, 10-15Mt of which is procured under offtake in South Africa from Thungela with the balance sourced from third party volumes primarily from South Africa and Australia with expansions into Indonesia, U.S., and Colombia.

Planning and executing the physical marketing, sales & trading strategies of exports and aligning it with the overall trading strategy and risk policy require special focus.

KEY TASKS

Regional Commodity Portfolio Management

  • Determine the optimal short-medium term commodity allocation and sourcing to ensure the highest value is generated for the regional commodity sales/trading book(s)
  • Effectively manage risk exposure to ensure sustainable value generation within region(s)
  • Optimize the Commercial/Operational interface for the traders through understanding of the commodity including, quality, tonnage and timing, availability for sale to end use customers and/or traders
  • Understanding of MtM P&L and impact on portfolio valuation / Work with traders and Risk Management to ensure best defined forward price curves

Systems and Reporting

  • Maintain CTRM system with regional contract information (e.g., matching sales and purchases) on a timely and accurate basis
  • Utilize CTRM system data to produce summary customer reports to assist Book Owner and Traders in commercial decision-making
  • Maintain regional positions book with up-to-date information
  • Ad hoc reporting for Book Owner and/or Front Office, liaison with Risk and Finance

Process Improvement

  • Make suggestions for process and system improvements
  • Continuous improvement on management of portfolio as markets change

Stakeholder Management

  • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders in the production Business Unit, Risk Management and Accounting

Risk and Governance

  • Maintain and integrate the commodity trading approval process
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with Marketing’s risk framework

 

Qualifications

Preferred - Degree educated with a qualification in a relevant subject area

 Specific Knowledge requirements:

  • An understanding of the economic, commercial, and political issues affecting the coal market
  • Knowledge of and interest in the mining or resources industry and commodity markets
  • Expertise in global commodity markets and their drivers
  • Knowledge of coal value chain
  • Experience/knowledge of the coal market, technical coal specifications and operational knowledge
  • Deep understanding of marketing fundamentals (i.e., pricing, delivery strategy, value chain dynamics, net back calculations)
  • Advanced CTRM systems knowledge, e.g., Aspect
  • Reporting system knowledge, e.g., Tableau, Power BI
