Job Description

Reporting to the Cultural & Safety Leadership Manager, the Investigation Specialist will facilitate comprehensive incident investigations and sharing of information across Met Coal sites.

This is a newly created role based in our Brisbane Corporate Office with frequent travel to our operations in Central Queensland.

Key accountabilities include:

  • Facilitate incident investigations using our Learning from Incidents methodology.
  • Coach safety professionals and site investigation leads in investigation methodologies and potential corrective actions to take arising from an investigation.
  • Advise the line on incident investigation process.
  • Proactively support the line in communication expectations around incident reporting and investigation.
  • Identify which actions should be implemented at other sites within the business and coordinate the allocation of these actions.
  • Support the review of investigations of repeat safety incidents to determine if the correct and direct contributing root causes were identified and if recommended corrective actions address all the causes adequately.
  • Provide specialist, technical, or legal input into the investigation report, including but not limited to analysing incident data on an ad-hoc basis.
  • Monitor repeat incidents for various factor or causation levels.
  • Monitor effectiveness of recommendations proposed, actions taken and learning transmission.
  • Share relevant safety information/statistics and learnings in the Safety Leadership Team and Significant Incident meetings.
  • Review incident alert communication.
  • Contribute to a purpose-led, high-performing culture within the site safety function that is aligned with the company values, is inclusive and promotes diversity.

Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualification in incident investigation, human factors or other related discipline.
  • Extensive practical experience in a similar role/context.
  • Demonstrated experience working as incident investigation lead within a technical environment.
  • Knowledge of safety policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing continuous improvement ideas.
  • Demonstrated in fostering a safety-first attitude and culture.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the operational aspects associate with mining operations.
  • Strong track record of interfacing with and influencing colleagues at all levels.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
