POSITION TITLE: Assistant Director of Student Life and Inclusion, Belonging, and Justice

DEPARTMENT: Student Affairs 

REPORTS TO: Dean of Students and Community Life 

DIRECT REPORTS: Student workers within Community Council (ComCil) and the Coretta Scott King Center (CSKC)

POSITION SUMMARY

The Assistant Director of Inclusion, Belonging, and Justice is a dynamic role that brings together community relationships, education, and responsibility to foster a sense of shared belonging and accountability within a framework that understands the needs of a diverse campus. Responsibilities incorporate Community Governance mentorship, DEI education and programming, as well as transformative justice work through a trauma-informed lens. As an educator, the Assistant Director develops and implements comprehensive training and campus-wide educational programs throughout the academic year. This role works collaboratively across campus to create and/or increase transparency, inclusion, and empowerment for all community members and supporting initiatives towards diversity, equity and inclusion. This position manages concerns related to the Racial Discrimination Prevention Policy (RDPP) in collaboration with the Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion team (JEDI). The Assistant Director is responsible for coordinating with the Title IX Coordinator on Antioch’s Sexual Offense Prevention Policy (SOPP) and compliance with Title IX and related equity initiatives. The Assistant Director oversees the handling of the community standards process to ensure a transformative justice approach and serves as a deputy Title IX officer for cases alleging sexual misconduct and gender-based discrimination for students, faculty and staff. 

Duties & Responsibilities

Inclusion

  • Provide individual support (including referrals) to students in their social, leadership, and identity development. In collaboration with JEDI, provide advocacy and support for students on campus issues and bias incidents.  
  • Plan, implement and lead programs and activities to increase involvement of diverse student populations including, but not exclusive to, LGBTQIA identified students, Asian/Asian American students, African/Black/African American students, Latinx students, and other underrepresented and marginalized populations as needed. 
  • Serve as liaison to various campus departments for recruitment and retention of underrepresented populations, with special emphasis on first year recruitment and first year and sophomore retention. 
  • Serve as Student Affairs lead on collaborative work with staff in diversity, equity, & inclusion, Student Affairs, Human Resources, Academic Affairs as well as other staff, faculty and students to develop and implement diversity programs and training initiatives that facilitate a diverse, inclusive and equitable campus community.
  • Facilitate the hiring, supervision, and evaluation of the CSKC/JEDI student positions  

Belonging

  • Advise culturally based student organizations to foster belonging, inclusion, affinity, and campus pride; develop strong advisory relationships with advisees. 
  • Apply identity development, intersectionality and/or social justice framework/ theories to all programs, training, and retreats, that focus on student engagement and retention. 
  • Facilitate the hiring, supervision, and evaluation of the Community Council student positions  
  • Strengthen the mechanisms of community governance, eg: offer suggestions and proposals to the Community Council and other governance bodies
  • Design, administer, and analyze co-curricular assessment data for the Student Life division to understand and identify community needs impacting belonging and retention; work with campus partners to identify solutions to achieve College goals.

Justice

  • Provide consultative services to the campus community regarding issues of affirmative consent, discrimination, harassment, retaliation, SOPP, RDPP, and other matters.
  • Assist Public Safety with compliance in Clery Act standards and related reports.
  • In partnership with the Title IX Coordinator and/or JEDI, investigate allegations of discrimination, harassment, retaliation, and other areas as requested.
  • Identify opportunities for systemic corrective action, recommend changes to policies or operational practices and/or implementation of training to reduce recurrence of complaints. 
  • Oversee the student conduct system through a lens of transformative justice. 
  • Ensure implementation and compliance with applicable policies and ensure that annual training and regularly scheduled workshops will be provided to all faculty, staff and students. 
  • Attend regular meetings and trainings to stay apprised of changing guidance, laws, and best practices. 

Other

  • Serve on relevant college-wide committees, including Assessment, JEDI, and Community Council.
    • Serve in the Student Affairs on-call duty rotation and respond to crisis situations as needed.
    • Serve as effective supervisor for student employees engaged through the Antioch College Works program
  • Other responsibilities may be assigned depending upon College and student needs.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Master’s degree in higher education, student development, social work or a related area required.
  • Experience working effectively with gender equity, affirmative consent, and Title IX in a higher education or nonprofit setting. 
  • Experience working effectively with diverse populations while understanding the complexities of intersectionality among groups that represent gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, sexuality, race, ethnicity, class, physical and mental ability, age, religion and national origin.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct investigations in a professional, inclusive, and timely way.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality in all appropriate areas while maintaining a positive and solution oriented demeanor.
  • Demonstrated high degree of independent judgment and high level of accountability for decision making.
  • Skilled in collaborative problem solving, conflict resolution and teamwork.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively and positively with a wide range of constituencies.
  • Experience in program evaluation, assessment, analysis, and improvement.
  • Adept at Microsoft Suite: WORD, EXCEL, Power Point.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments simultaneously, work as a team member with little supervision and meet deadlines.
  • Commitment to contribute to a professional and diverse work environment.

Environmental Considerations  

Position requires incumbent to operate in an office space and to move about campus and in other venues during all seasons and weather to engage with students, staff, faculty and other Antioch community members and supporters, and to attend functions associated with Antioch College.

Physical Considerations

  • Physical ability to perform daily office activities, to include sitting long periods at a desk, light duty lifting, written and oral correspondence.
  • Ability to utilize standard office equipment such as phone and computer and other devices used in support of work accomplishment.
