Role Number:200480253
Do you have a passion for invention and self-challenge? Are you seeking to push the limits of what’s considered feasible? As part of our Battery Engineering group, craft creative battery solutions that deliver more energy in smaller spaces than ever before. We work across multi-disciplinary teams to transform improved hardware elements into a single, integrated design. Join us, and you’ll help us innovate new battery technologies that continually outperform the previous iterations. By collaborating with other product development groups across Apple, you’ll push the industry boundaries of what batteries can do and improve the product experience for our customers across the world.
Support the characterization of energy storage materials and systems with the use of materials characterization and mechanical testing techniques. In this role, you will develop methods based on project needs for a comprehensive understanding of mechanisms and root causes for mechanical deformation and failure. Additionally, you will be trained in and support characterization techniques, review data from other analysts, and coordinate and implement multiple techniques to drive the projects by providing materials understanding and correlation between properties and performance in a system.
Key Qualifications
- BS in Physics, Materials Science, Mechanical engineering or related field and 10 years of relevant industry experience (PhD preferred)
- Demonstrated problem-solving and troubleshooting skills for mechanical characterization of battery materials, components and systems
- Hands-on experience in characterization (optical microscopy, SEM, FIB/SEM) and mechanical testing instruments (Nano-indenter, universal testing machines such as Instron, etc.)
- Knowledge of batteries, battery materials and their characterization by mechanical and materials analysis methods
- Experience in computational and simulation methods for mechanical behavior of batteries and components
- Excellent written and oral communications skills
Description
- Acquire, analyze and interpret data from mechanical testing (indentation, tensile, compression, peel test, etc.), materials characterization analysis (Optical, SEM, FIB/SEM, etc.)
- Identify and define the right characterization techniques for submitted samples and implement focused characterization projects to drive root-cause analysis and a deep material understanding
- Train in and engage other materials analysis techniques to address needs for projects involving characterization
- Collaborate with other departments including production and R&D to interface on characterization projects
- Adhere to outstanding lab practices: maintain an organized and clean laboratory environment, ensure sample piece location is controlled, and follow all lab safety regulations
Education & Experience
- BS in Physics, Materials Science, Mechanical engineering or related field and 10 years of relevant industry experience (PhD preferred)
