Description
Our team works on evolving a set of innovative distributed backend services and tools. You’ll find ways to combine our unique problem domain with established distributed system techniques in order to help drive the project forward to achieve high performance, reliability and long term maintainability. Together with the senior team members you'll analyze problem requirements, existing solutions, and available systems to help make high-level decisions about how to architect the backend, considering both medium- and long-term goals. Once solutions are identified, you will work with the team to implement them while developing appropriate testing and operational mechanisms.
You will be most successful here as a hands-on and proactive manager who thrives in a supportive, respectful, and balanced work environment with interesting and challenging problems to tackle. You have excellent judgement and integrity with the ability to make timely and sound decisions. You know how to drive constructive discussion of design points, learn from your team, and use your experience to help the team grow and the project evolve.
We welcome all applicants, but familiarity with the following areas will help you come up to speed fastest on our project:
- Existing distributed databases and distributed computation engine systems.
- Understanding of distributed systems’ space concerns and algorithms.
- Familiarity with application and service monitoring tools and techniques.
- Involvement with incident management and response.
- Experience with high-performance strongly-typed languages such as Swift, Rust, C , Scala, or others.
- Familiar with virtualization technology.
Managers at Apple split their time between pure people management, technical leadership, and hands-on coding. In your role as a manager on our team:
- You’ll spend a significant amount of your time working on distributed services engineering, tooling, and contributing to operational standards used across the organization.
- You’ll lead by example and collaborate with your teammates to identify problem requirements, develop product roadmaps, and work with teams to implement long lasting solutions.
- You’ll engage with other teams to help identify issues and establish long term relationships that include knowledge sharing and provide customer support.
- You’ll provide valuable feedback loops to engineering teams backed by application metrics and log data.
- You’ll invest in areas of service scalability (resiliency, redundancy, performance) by driving relevant architectural projects, as well as collaborating with operations and other adjacent teams in planning meetings.
- You’ll develop expertise and own multiple components critical to Apple’s success.
- You’ll contribute to engineering a high-performance system through prioritizing work to balance between architectural, operational, and temporal concerns.
- You’ll design new ways to scale Apple’s distributed services to ever increasing problem sizes.
- You’ll collaborate with engineers who create Apple’s technology, tools, and operating systems stack.
HERE YOU’LL FIND THAT WE:
- Have an encouraging and growth-focused workplace culture.
- Practice a blameless approach to operations and outages, and work together to define safety mechanisms and processes.
- Value integrity and respect for others, and take the safety and comfort of our employees seriously.
- Provide a peaceful work environment where you can be yourself.
- Encourage you to use accrued vacation time and maintain a healthy work-life balance.
