University Communications is a unit that reports to the Office of the Chancellor. Its mission is to position Appalachian State University as a leader in higher education by presenting stories that illustrate the university’s strategic initiatives and unique character. Through sharing stories about the ways our students, faculty, staff and alumni are making a difference in the world, we enhance the university’s brand and increase the value of an App State degree. By coordinating and facilitating emergency and critical communications, we ensure accurate, consistent information for the public.The News and Media Specialist plays an integral role in this mission by:Researching, writing and editing press releases and features for print and webDeveloping story ideas to support overall communications strategyGathering and organizing assets for news and feature storiesEditing, proofreading and fact-checking editorial and promotional copyPitching story ideas and press releases to news mediaAssisting with media inquiriesUtilizing Public Relations Management software to build and maintain media lists, craft pitches and distribute news releasesMaintaining a faculty experts database and helping connect faculty and staff with news media and community groupsAssisting the department at press conferences, ribbon cuttings and other media eventsRepresenting the department at university meetings and programsContributing to department reports, newsletters and presentationsAddressing other duties, projects and special assignments as required
