SUMMARY
The Cost Accountant is a key member of the Corporate Finance Group and an active member of the mill management team and is accountable for the ongoing analysis of process constraints and deviations, margin analysis, and tracing costs back to underlying activities. Additionally, this position will monitor the data accumulation systems needed to provide accurate, complete, and timely costing information throughout the organization. This role is open at our particleboard plant located in Albany, OR. The Cost Accountant will generally be in an office environment. However, it is expected of this position to understand all aspects of the operation and interact/visit with all areas regularly to obtain this knowledge and stay current with any developments within the respective business areas.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Review standard costs for inaccuracies and deviations outside of tolerance.
- Update standard costs in the bill of materials, routings, activity rates, etc.
- Analyze standard cost deviations throughout the month and as a part of the month-end close process.
- Work with the Costing Manager and other Business Partners to effectively complete the month-end close process.
- Conduct ongoing process constraint analyses in efforts to promote resolutions.
- Report on cost of goods manufactured by SKU, Grade, Substrate, Facility.
- Report on periodic variances and their root cause, focusing on spending variances in the respective business area.
- Responsible for any incentive program compliance including tracking and reporting.
- Prepare financial analysis and decision support on operating postures.
- Ensure adequate internal controls are in place and being followed at the mill, and that all required SOX verifications are completed on a timely basis.
- Financial statement review and analysis of actual variances against standards.
- Ensure that all accounting-related policies and procedures are being followed at the mills.
- Provide timely and accurate financial information to the management team to facilitate optimal decision-making.
- Provide support to internal and external audit processes as required.
- Integral member of Mill Leadership Team and the North American Finance Team.
REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelors’ Degree in Accounting or Finance and/or recognized Professional Accounting Designation.
- Prior experience in finance/accounting for a manufacturing company is preferred.
- Prior experience with product costing (monitoring standards, looking at production orders and budgets, looking for trends, monitoring costing variances) in a manufacturing environment is preferred
- Knowledge and understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and able to read and understand financial statements.
- Must have advanced Excel skills.
- Prior experience using SAP in a manufacturing environment is preferred.
- Ability to work in a team-based, multi-disciplinary environment and possess strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to travel (10%), as required for system training and other initiatives requiring finance representation.
