Arcadis has been shortlisted by the Gateway Development Commission to serve as a Project Delivery Partner (PDP) in connection with the Hudson Tunnel Project (HTP).  We are seeking to engage with technical experts excited by this opportunity who would like to join our locally based teams in New York and in New Jersey. Arcadis seeks a Sustainability Manager to join the Gateway Program Project Delivery Partner in New York/New Jersey to play a vital role in supporting the Gateway Program to develop and implement sustainability strategies specific to the Program. The ideal candidate will bring hands-on experience from having implemented sustainability initiatives in the rail transit/tunnel/transportation sector.

Role description:

As a Sustainability Manager, your Responsibilities will include assisting GDC in complying with current sustainability legislation; implementing strategies to make projects and organizations more eco-friendly and setting guidelines to comply with all state and federal environmental legislation; and leading training sessions and workshops on sustainability practices and policies. You will develop, implement, and oversee sustainable practices within construction projects to minimize environmental impact, optimize resource efficiency, and ensure compliance with relevant regulations and standards. You will work closely with project teams, contractors, suppliers, and stakeholders to integrate sustainability principles into all phases of the program’s construction projects.

Role accountabilities:

  • Develop and Implement Sustainability Strategies: Design and implement comprehensive sustainability strategies tailored to specific construction projects, considering factors such as materials sourcing, energy efficiency, waste management, and water conservation.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Stay abreast of environmental regulations and standards relevant to construction activities, ensuring compliance and recommending necessary adjustments to meet or exceed requirements. 
  • Life Cycle Assessments: Conduct life cycle assessments (LCAs) to evaluate the environmental impact of construction materials and processes, identifying opportunities for improvement and sustainable alternatives.
  • Green Building Certification: Lead efforts to obtain green building certifications (e.g., LEED, BREEAM) for construction projects, coordinating documentation, audits, and submissions to meet certification requirements.
  • Supplier and Contractor Engagement: Collaborate with suppliers and contractors to promote the use of sustainable materials, technologies, and practices throughout the supply chain, fostering partnerships that align with sustainability objectives.
  • Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy: Identify opportunities to enhance energy efficiency and integrate renewable energy solutions (e.g., solar, wind) into construction projects, aiming to reduce carbon emissions and reliance on fossil fuels.
  • Waste Reduction and Recycling: Develop strategies to minimize construction waste generation, promote recycling and reuse initiatives, and ensure proper disposal of hazardous materials in compliance with regulations.
  • Community Engagement: Engage with local communities and stakeholders to communicate sustainability initiatives, address concerns, and foster positive relationships, demonstrating commitment to social responsibility and environmental stewardship.
  • Monitoring and Reporting: Establish monitoring systems to track key sustainability metrics and performance indicators throughout construction projects, preparing regular reports to assess progress, identify areas for improvement, and communicate achievements to relevant stakeholders.
  • Continuous Improvement: Drive a culture of continuous improvement by identifying best practices, evaluating emerging technologies and trends in sustainable construction, and implementing innovative solutions to enhance environmental performance.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental science, sustainability, engineering, or a related field (advanced degree preferred).
  • At least 10 years of experience in sustainability management or a similar role. Knowledge of sustainability principles and practices. Experience in developing and implementing sustainability strategies and initiatives.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and other relevant software applications.

Preferred Skiils: 

  • Previous experience in sustainability management within the construction industry, with a strong understanding of sustainable building practices, green building certifications, and relevant regulations.
  • Proficiency in conducting life cycle assessments, analyzing environmental impacts, and developing sustainability strategies.
  • Excellent project management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks, manage deadlines, and coordinate cross-functional teams effectively.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and influence stakeholders at all levels and effectively communicate complex sustainability concepts.
  • Knowledge of renewable energy technologies, energy efficiency measures, waste management practices, and sustainable materials preferred.
  • Certification in relevant sustainability standards (e.g., LEED AP, BREEAM Assessor) is advantageous.
  • Commitment to sustainability principles, environmental conservation, and social responsibility
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with diverse teams.

Arcadis offers benefits for full time and part time positions. These benefits include medical, dental, and vision, EAP,  401K, STD, LTD, AD&D, life insurance, paid parental leave, reward & recognition program and optional benefits including wellbeing benefits, adoption assistance and tuition reimbursement.  We offer nine paid holidays and 15 days PTO that accrue per year. The salary range for this position is $100,000 - $150,000.
