What are the responsibilities and job description for the Team Lead- R&D position at Arctic Wolf?

About the role 

A Team Lead - R&D will be responsible for leading the team to deliver high value, performant software solutions. The team lead will provide guidance and direction to a team of developers throughout the software development life-cycle, in accordance with our R&D Department and Team Responsibilities, Foundations of R&D and Development Guidelines. They will also provide guidance on best practices for running, monitoring, and maintaining our system in conjunction with the Lead Developer on the team. The team lead will support developers in their daily work as well as in their long term career growth.

A team lead is different from a Project Lead. Each project has a Project Lead who is the main point of contact for a particular project. The team lead works with this person to deliver the project, however the Project Lead is responsible for creating the project plan, updating the Weekly project status, sprintly project updates, and generating project estimates. The team lead should support the project lead by providing direction, clarity and removing obstacles.It is possible for some projects that the team lead and project team lead are the same person. 

A team lead is different from a Lead Developer. The team lead is more focused on team management, product roadmap execution, and organizational performance. The Lead Developer is more focused on the technology, architecture, and software delivery performance. If there is no Lead Developer on the team then the Team Lead takes on both roles. 

Scope of Role

Generates and manages the day to day work for a team of people based on the Product Team Roadmap.

Responsibilities

Team Leadership (40-70%)

  • Manage a team that will deliver high quality, innovative software solutions, in collaboration with stakeholders such as architects, developers, product managers, and customer success teams.
  • Support the team by providing direction, clarity and removing obstacles.
  • Supervise daily development tasks in the team ranging from prototyping, design, implementation, automated testing, deployment, operations, and troubleshooting.
  • Provide immediate and continuous job performance feedback to assist your team in achieving job requirements, career development goals, Foundations of R&D, and R&D Department and Team Responsibilities.
  • Mentor each team member; help them grow their technical and leadership skills.Establish career development plans and achievable goals for your reports and support their ongoing growth.
  • Drive continuous development process improvements.
  • Build collaborative relationships with other teams and stakeholders within the organization.

Support & Administration (10%)

  • Provide First level sign-off on Vacation time and expensify.
  • In conjunction with the R&D Manager/Director, HR, and technical lead, assist in the recruitment process through interviews with internal and external candidates for both full-time and co-op employees.
  • Provide input to the R&D Director in regards to salary and stock compensation increases.

Software Development and Design (20-50%)

  • Participate in the full software development life cycle, building well-designed, testable, efficient, secure code.
  • Produce specifications and determine operational feasibility.
  • Integrate software components into a fully functional software system; document and maintain software functionality.
  • Execute assigned and self generated work. Seek and receive mentoring.
  • Understand the product and how Security Services delivers the service.
  • Develop professional expertise, apply company policies and procedures to resolve a variety of issues. Determine a course of action based on guidelines, and modify processes and methods as required.
  • Develop an understanding of best practices for writing code and developing computer software.Work with team members to deliver the Product Roadmap.
  • Follow the Development Guidelines when building software for the AWN solution. This include secure coding practices.
  • Follow the R&D R&D Department and Team Responsibilities  and R&D Principles to deliver software for our clients.

Training Role Objective

  • Attend training, seminars or webinars relevant to job role to enhance current knowledge base and skill set in order to improve job performance and efficiency. Attend at least one event a year. The training should not impact job/project deliverables.

Security Requirements

  • Conducts duties and responsibilities in accordance with AWN’s Information Security policies, standards, processes and controls to protect the confidentiality, integrity and availability of AWN business information.
  • Background checks are required for this position.
