AREA 17
Brooklyn, NY Remote Full Time
POSTED ON 5/18/2022 CLOSED ON 12/15/2022

What are the responsibilities and job description for the Apprenticeship position at AREA 17?

We are inviting applicants to our 2022 Apprentice Program who are eager to get world-class hands-on experience in our industry. With a belief that we can help the world to be more open, resilient and optimistic, AREA 17 works with clients we trust and admire across various industries, such as Getty, US Chamber of Commerce, Nike, and The New York Times. This six-month apprenticeship is designed for curious people who want to learn our craft through curriculum supported by immersion, mentorship and hands-on experience. Apprentices will have the opportunity to learn alongside experts and collaborate with each other on a project of their own.

At AREA 17, we will make sure to offer you an environment where your work matters. This apprenticeship is about creating and contributing to work that is built to last. Our program is an excellent opportunity to learn more about your craft, work with and create an impact for organizations that want to do good in the world, and collaborate with a team that cares about the work, about the world, and about each other.
For our 2022 cohort starting in July, we are offering positions in Design, Engineering, Strategy, Production and Operations. All Apprentices will collaborate with one another to learn as a group and as individuals. Qualified candidates should be highly motivated, collaborative, detail-oriented, and eager to pitch in whenever and wherever their support is needed. This is a paid apprenticeship classified as temporary employment. Upon completion of the program, Apprentices will be considered for permanent positions on the team at the Associate level.

Curriculum

Our program offers a dual curriculum: one part interdisciplinary, to teach how we bring brands and products into the world, one part discipline focused, to teach the foundational elements of one discipline’s focus and day to day work.

Interdisciplinary curriculum will include:

  • Dedicated mentorship from our team of experts across Strategy, Design, Engineering, Production and Operations
  • Collaboration with others through an interdisciplinary approach, to learn how to work with all disciplines regardless of your speciality
  • Immersion in our methodology to understand how we approach our craft with clients and projects across different industries and phases of work
  • Hands-on experience with client and project teams to support our portfolio of work
  • Opportunities to contribute to our work through your own personal interests and skills

By speciality, discipline-focused curriculum will include:

  • Production: how to manage a project, a team and client stakeholders; roadmapping and sprint planning; prioritization and time management; growing client relationships; tools for reporting and how to gather strategic business insights
  • Engineering: how to build scalable and long lasting products for the digital age; how we build our open source CMS, Twill; the different tools and frameworks used in front-end and back-end engineering; the fundamentals of devops; project management tools and platforms (eg. Jira, GitHub)
  • Design: how to create and manage a design system; our design principles and philosophy; primary design tools (eg. Figma); how strategy informs design; the collaboration between design and engineering
  • Strategy: product and brand strategy; how to conduct interviews with stakeholders and/or users; workshop frameworks; conducting research, analysis and synthesis of qualitative and quantitative data; how our strategic thinking applies to design and engineering
  • Operations: how an agency operates; the collaboration between business, talent and experience; finance and HR tools; time tracking and utilization; how to create a remote hybrid working environment
