It is owned by employee shareholders, global growth equity firm General Atlantic and Hg, the specialist software and technology services investor. Argus Media is committed to ensuring career and personal growth for all its staff and provides extensive training and career development opportunities, as well as participation in employee-led initiatives, including a women’s network.
We report first-hand on what’s happening globally in the energy space – from hydrogen to coal, crude oil to green ammonia, carbon markets to wind farms. And we do the same for economically vital markets in agriculture, fertilizers, metals and chemicals.
We employ almost 500 journalists worldwide and have 27 offices in Europe, Russia, the Middle East, Africa, South Asia, China, Japan, Singapore and North and South America.
What we’re looking for
This is an excellent opportunity to develop your career covering the economically and politically influential sector of global energy and commodities. You will apply your skills across daily news reporting, market analysis, features and editorials in this fast-paced environment with the highest standards of journalistic independence and integrity; and there are opportunities to travel and present papers at industry conferences and lead webinar sessions.
Argus is seeking a deputy editor to join the Freight team in New York or Houston, which covers the tanker, dry bulk and LPG markets. As a senior member of this team, you will become familiar with all of these markets and an expert in one or more of them.
You will primarily cover the refined product tanker market through daily price assessments, writing interesting, analytical market commentaries, news coverage and in-depth analysis to appear online and in the daily Argus Tanker Freight, Argus Gas Freight, and Argus Dry Freight reports. You will also be responsible for maintaining and expanding the contact base and attending conferences.
Other responsibilities will include finalizing publications, growing Argus’ freight coverage, editing copy, and engaging with subscribers.
The global freight market is in a state of constant change in its position at the centre of international trade, geopolitics and environmental regulation. This represents an exciting opportunity to join the team and cover high-profile news on changes that can reshape the market and impact on the wider crude, oil products, gas, and dry bulk commodity markets.
You will work in tandem with reporters and other editors who will provide training and support to develop in-depth knowledge of the markets.
What will you be doing?
- Monitor and assess markets to produce daily price assessments, market commentaries, news, analysis and reports
- Edit market commentary copy and choose stories to include in daily publications
- Work with other departments to help promote the use of Argus price assessments and help develop new pricing tools for the freight market
- Give presentations to inform subscribers of market trends and the latest updates to Argus’ pricing tools
- Develop an understanding of relevant commodity markets, working with other Argus teams to produce joint content.
- Regular meetings and daily communication with key members of the industry, including traders, brokers, and business leaders to build relationships and gather news
- Contribute copy to relevant daily and periodical publications and the online news service, and contribute to special content and presentations as required
- Attend meetings, conferences and industry events to build contacts, report on news and represent Argus in the industry
What we're looking for in you?
- A graduate with a strong degree and several years of relevant work experience
- Proven ability to develop, source and write industry news to deadline
- Knowledge of the crude oil and/or freight sectors useful
- Excellent writing, grammar and numeracy skills (these will be tested as part of the interview process)
- Ability to use data in generating stories and analysis is preferred, while a willingness to learn is essential
- Excellent communication skills with ability to network and build contacts with industry executives. Strong presentation skills also preferred.
- Prior experience of working in the financial or energy journalism sector is useful but not essential
- Strong co-ordination and time management skills with the ability to work well within a team
- Additional languages useful but not essential
