Fire Corps is a volunteer-based program, comprised of highly-trained men and women who donate their time and skills to support the AFMA.

Fire Corps volunteers create a safer, stronger, and better prepared community by rendering support to the Authority in accordance with the mission of Arizona Fire & Medical Authority. Performs a variety of Authority-wide community education/information tasks; performs a variety of administrative and technical work related to community education/information/prevention regarding life safety and other Authority programs; and assists, supports, and enhances non-emergency services provided to the citizens of the Authority. Fire Corps volunteer is a non-compensated position.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all personnel in this classification, only to provide a summary of the major duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.
EXAMPLES OF THE WORK PERFORMED (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
• Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service
• Helps organize and participates in community events, presentations, and demonstrations
• Prepares displays and exhibits related to fire prevention and life safety; dispense safety pamphlets, handouts, and brochures
• Assists with fire prevention and life safety education programs
• Participates in special projects
• Assists in fundraising/grant-writing
• Assists in rebuilding/cleanup after natural disasters or other catastrophes
• Assists in safety system distribution, installation and maintenance (smoke alarms, lockboxes, car seats, reflective address signs, etc.); provides a high level of key security for emergency lockbox master keys
• Educates homeowners regarding the importance of having properly installed, well maintained and working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms
• Assists with records maintenance
• Assists in promotion of Authority safety system programs
• Assists in programs such as rehab/canteen, emergency preplanning, and/or incident reporting
• Provides administrative/clerical support, filing, recordkeeping, etc.
• Maintains confidentiality
• Answers telephones and staff’s reception area
• With appropriate training and certification, assists with fire safety inspections
• Promotes community awareness of the Authority, as well as its needs for additional volunteers
• Attends quarterly training meetings; assists in sharing ideas and thoughts about the program
• Abides by all Authority policies and procedures.
• Conducts, attends, and interacts in meetings with Authority personnel, other agencies, and the public; maintains positive working relationship with the AFMA personnel and the public.
• Completes required drivers training classesMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Must be 21 years or older at time of placement
• Must possess, or be able to obtain by time of assignment, a valid Arizona State driver’s license if assigned to an Authority driving position
• Must meet insurability requirements of Authority insurance carrier
• Must successfully complete the Authority Fire Corps Orientation Program
Ability to:
• Handle multiple tasks
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, Authority personnel, supervisors, and the general public; ability to work effectively as a team member
• To work well with people of all ages and abilities
• Communicate effectively in both oral and written English
• Maintain confidential information
• Follow instruction from supervising personnel
• Work on own, self-motivated
• Operate general business machines – phones, computer, copier, fax where applicable
• Climb ladders and possess handyman skills where applicable
• Prevent waste and damage of materials, supplies, and equipment
• Perform community service activities
• Maintain necessary records pertaining to tasks
• Learn general knowledge and geography of the Authority
• Learn and abide by the policies and procedures of the Authority
• Act / react calmly in stressful situationsWORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those a volunteer may encounter while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, as found in a normal business office with computers. The individual will be working with and around electronic equipment. Work may be performed in multiple locations as assigned. Additionally, a volunteer may:
• Perform work indoors and/or outdoors as the job/task dictates
• Be exposed to extreme temperatures due to weather
• Be subjected to intermittent high noise levels
• Work from uneven surfaces, ladders, and/or stairs
• Work independently, as part of a select team or as a large group
TRAINING PROVIDED
AFMA Fire Corps volunteers will be provided with the following training:
• Authority Orientation
• Basic First Aid / CPR Certification
• Support and training applicable to their Fire Corps assignments
• Drivers Training
