This position is located in the College of Integrative Sciences and Arts at the Downtown Phoenix campus and may require early morning or evening hours depending on lab schedule.

Essential Duties

  • Works under the mentorship of the lab manager and senior instructional specialists to manage teams of student workers and their day to day tasks
  • Supervises the setup of laboratory experiments including assembling equipment, preparing reagents and solutions; supervises the disassembling of laboratory experiments and waste disposal
  • Mentors student workers in their day to day activities
  • Trains new student workers in lab policies and procedures, such as reagent preparation, safety, and waste disposal
  • Troubleshoots issues with current experimental set ups and offers suggestions for improving curriculum
  • Edits laboratory set up and clean up instructions given to the student workers
  • Assists with inventories and maintenance projects for laboratory equipment and materials
  • Identifies classroom, IT, and facilities problems and communicates these to the laboratory manager
  • Supervises and participates in inventory projects and requests items to be ordered by the laboratory manager
  • Communicates with instructors to see that the needs of the laboratory courses are being met

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment; OR, Four years of progressively responsible instructional or subject work experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with working in a professional science lab in higher education (2 years)
  • Experience in preparation of media and reagents used for biology and chemistry
  • Demonstrated knowledge of principles and practices of laboratory operations, specifically biology and chemistry
  • Evidence of effective communication skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the proper and safe handling, use, and disposal of laboratory waste, instruments, specimens, and equipment
  • Experience working in a team environment
  • Evidence of successful leadership of undergraduate students
  • Experience working with diverse populations in a multipurpose laboratory setting

Working Environment

Regularly performs tasks in a standard office environment subject to extended periods of sitting; pushing/pulling/lifting up to 20 pounds; stands, bends, reaches and walks both short and extended distances
