Principal Responsibilities:
Creates and presents academic and program information
at New Student Orientation to First-Year and Transfer students, along with
their guests.
Interprets and advises students on
University, College, and Departmental policies, procedures, and academic
requirements.
Creates/maintains materials for students to more easily
navigate their degree paths such as 4-year plans, course checklists, and Advisement
Reports (curricular updates).
Assists students in course planning
to meet academic requirements and/or career preparation. May assist with manual enrollment into department
courses including research, preceptorship, and internships for university
credit.
Identifies or evaluates options for
students who must petition for an exception to a course or program
requirement. Makes approved adjustments to student’s program of study.
Assesses students’ stage of
development (academic, career, and personal) to promote academic growth by
determining suitable developmental tasks and engagement opportunities.
Helps students explore pertinent internships, club involvement, volunteer
work, and undergraduate research opportunities.
Assists student in establishing realistic and attainable academic and career goals; refers students to additional career counseling services as needed; may facilitate student internships and partnerships with industry and alumni.
Monitors academic progress of students; determines eligibility and satisfactory progress toward degree; identifies current and potential needs or problem areas (e.g., study skills, tutoring) and refers students to appropriate campus resources for further assistance.
Evaluates transfer credits from
other academic institutions for applicability to degree program.
Maintains student files, records, and database;
documents all pertinent student information in Trellis (Advising Notes);
updates computerized information system regarding changes to student
status and performs data analysis as necessary.
Gathers and/or calculates necessary
information such as GPAs or enrollment statistics; prepares various
reports as requested.
Assists in the development and
coordination of seminars, workshops, and other activities/events for student
onboarding, building community, academic recovery, student engagement, and
student retention; conducts assessment of these events and activities.
Processes degree checks/audits for
students planning to graduate.
Assists in the development and
coordination of seminars, workshops, and other activities/events for
building community, academic recovery, student engagement, and student
retention; conducts assessment of these events and activities.
Assists the College of Science
central advising office with general drop-in advising.
May teach a 1-unit success course, SCI 195a or similar, each fall
and/or spring to onboard new majors or assist students in Academic
Recovery; may be involved with leading other interventions as requested.
Assists in the development and coordination of student poster
fairs, graduation ceremonies, and recruitment events (few times per year).
Serves on faculty-led undergraduate GEOS committees such
as curriculum, scholarships, curriculum assessment, and student awards.
Participates in campus-wide
committees and special projects to continue to develop professionally and
stay up to date on advising practices. (i.e. monthly UPAC – University
Professional Advising Council meetings).
Non-advising related services to the department, aligned with department mission, vision, and goals:
When needed, helps support processes
related to the undergraduate program including wait-list management,
course enrollment, and/or coordination of new student and transfer
orientations.
Assists in implementing undergraduate
assessment.
Coordinates with the COS Development Office to post
scholarship opportunities on Scholarship Universe.
Assists Department Head with collecting and summarizing
data regarding our undergraduate program for APR and annual retreats.
Other duties as assigned.
