Duties & Responsibilities
Administration & Supervisory
Direct operations of the Academic Advising Center
Direct activities, programs, and processes relevant to academic advising
Participate in special projects and professional development to remain current on best practices in advising
Work collaboratively with College faculty and Dean’s Office to establish and maintain policies and procedures regarding Advisement Reports, curriculum planning, and advisor training
Provide leadership to and supervision of Academic Advising professionals
Oversee hiring and retention of Academic Advising professionals
Mentor Academic Advising professionals and encourage their professional development
Student Services:
Oversee planning and facilitation of academic/student events, tracking of retention and advancement toward degree, and career advising/development services
Provide confidential advisement and counsel for students
Provide clear and consistent communication regarding important news, policies, and deadlines to faculty and students
Collaborate with department heads and faculty to assure student needs are addressed, particularly for students who are first-generation or from underrepresented populations
Collaborate with Student Success & Retention Specialist to provide analysis and assessment of student data and to ensure the College retains and graduates a large and diverse body of students
Collaborate with the Director of Recruitment regarding recruitment activities and strategies
Make decisions regarding General Petitions, Late Change Petitions, and other exceptions
University Service:
Build and maintain partnerships with University academic and student service units, including Student Success and Retention Innovation, Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid, Dean of Students, Student Engagement and Career Development, and others
Participate in the Academic Advising Council (AAC) with other advising directors
Participate in University committees as appropriate (with supervisor's approval)
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
Knowledge of student development theory, outreach practices, and student success services
Demonstrated knowledge of providing academic advising or in teaching/counseling in higher education
Excellent interpersonal communication and relationship building skills
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Extensive knowledge and application of academic advising principles, theories, and concepts
Complete knowledge of all functions and the broad industry best practices, techniques, and standards
Ability to exercise considerable latitude in determining objectives and approaches to assignments
Ability to work effectively in a team environment
Ability to handle confidential information with discretion
Ability to quickly learn and master new software and online reporting tools
