Job Description: Family CFO/COO

A combination of CFO plus COO is how we have described the role to most people outside of the firm and outside of the financial industry and we believe it might resonate with more people versus what is a Family Office Captain?  We often take the opportunity to describe what a Family Office Captain is, what they do, and what they must be in order to fulfill the role.

Ark Family CFO/COO – Family Office Captain

The Ark Family Office Operating System is implemented by the Family Office Captain, an individual responsible for leading and guiding the family and all supporting advisors to achieve the family’s goals and objectives. The Family Office Captain acts as a “CFO/COO” by managing, driving, and prioritizing the advisors and resources supporting and interacting with the family. Trust and relationships are at the core of this role. A Family Office Captain must build trust with the client’s family through sound decision-making and advice and then nurture that relationship to ensure retention.

Family Office Captain Roles and Responsibilities

As a Family Captain, you are called to possess four traits: Advisor, Consultant, Manager, Leader. Therefore you will have a dynamic and diverse set of responsibilities that include:

Maintain healthy and successful client engagements.

  • Stay intimately connected with each client’s needs and goals and execute the Ark Family Office Operating System while ensuring client goals are met and satisfied.
  • Maintain healthy personal and professional rapport with clients, the key people in their lives, and their advisor network while modeling Ark’s Core Values and Beliefs
  • Minimize client attrition and maximize referrals to other potential clients or influencers because of exemplary service and outcomes

Communications and administration management

  • Provide consistent communications and interactions with the client, adhering to the Ark Family Office Operating System, methods, and models
  • Organize the client’s financial ecosystem by implementing the Ark Family Office Cashflow Foundation
  • Maintain up-to-date and accurate Ark Family Office Portal, which organizes and centralizes the clients’ documents, meeting notes, project plans, and advisor lists
  • Run monthly meetings with clients to review progress, provide updates, and report results
  • Drive completion of tasks

Process adherence and optimization

  • Implement the Ark Family Office Operating System, the Ark Family Office Cashflow Foundation, and the Ark Family Office Client Assessment for each of your clients
  • Maintain client confidentiality and security protocols
  • Master workflows related to the role and seek to improve those processes where possible

What Kind of Experience You Should Have:

Our typical Family Office CFO/COO will have:

  • 15-30 years professional working experience
  • Been in an Executive or Chief of Staff position
  • 4-Year bachelor’s degree, an MBA, or equivalent experience
  • Hands-on experience with starting and operating a business
  • 10 years of experience managing client or corporate executive relationships
  • Their personal financial house in order
  • Fluent with financial concepts related to business AND family finance

Compensation

Base compensation for this role is $150,000 with opportunities to expand beyond that as the client load you are serving exceeds the firm’s profitability model. We expect you to reach that crossover point in the 18-24 month window. Once you have hit the crossover point, your compensation will transition from base to a percentage of your client billings. Operating with a full client load, we project an annual income in the range of $250,000-300,000.
