Position Overview (Summary/Objective)
This position is responsible for performing a full range of machine shop work at the skilled level of toolmaker. Typically, the Toolmaker makes new or replacement tooling and or machine parts utilizing all common machine tools such as Vertical CNC, CNC lathes and manual lathes, manual Bridgeport’s, and CNC Surface Grinders. The toolmaker can sharpen and create his/her own cutting tools and has knowledge of cutting tools and their specific uses and materials. The toolmaker understands the properties of common metals, such as 303, 304, 416 440, 17-4 etc. stainless steels, as well as 6061 Aluminum, Plastics such as Delrin, Nylon, heat treating and relieving of stress of common metals. The toolmaker understands complex blueprints and understands Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing. The toolmaker works with extremely close tolerances like a .0001” tolerance range. Knowledge of CNC CAD CAM software is a must, Mastercam knowledge is a plus. The toolmaker will be responsible for creating one-off complex parts, creating tool paths, and understanding the plan-ahead process for machining difficult parts. The toolmaker will be familiar with machine setups and tool holding and is able to work with Engineering.

Responsibilities
- Aligns and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials onto machines.
- Calculates dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers and veneer calipers.
- Uses MasterCam to develop toolpaths and machine parts to print.
- Using CNC Vertical Milling Center, installs and Sets tooling offsets, aligns and secures fixturing.
- Utilizing MasterCams layout/ Verify a Dynamic tool pathing for advanced machining processes.
- Retrieves stock appropriate stock meeting blue print note requirements, processes parts including movement to internal/external heat treatment or passivation.
- Maintains industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout and machining procedures.
- Measures, examines and tests completed parts in order to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications, using precision instruments such as micrometers.
- Monitors the feed and speed of machines during the machining process. Able to optimize machine program for speed and accuracy.
- Min 8 Years as a tool maker.
- Minimal supervision required
- Manufactures one-off parts to tight tolerances.
- Understands MasterCam and familiar with dynamic machining
- NOT a Production Position, Toolmaker must be familiar with doing their own setups.
- Installing tooling, programming, modeling parts.
- 10-15 Years working as a toolmaker/Modelmaker on high precision parts with tight tolerances.
