This professional staff person is responsible for maintaining the day-to-day operations of his/her assigned duties within the Pre-Admission Testing department. As a member of the interdisciplinary care team, the Pre-Admission Testing Nurse works collaboratively with the other members to assure safe and accurate delivery of care. In addition, the Pre-Admission Testing Nurse serves as a resource for technical services in a cross-functional mode to comprehensively serve patient needs

Work Schedule

Flexible schedules to cover all shifts and weekends, as hospital needs demand.

Primary Duties

Specific Unit Duties:

  • Collaborates with the Pre-Admission Testing Coordinator to perform all aspects of preadmission teaching and testing for each patient scheduled.
  • Able to interpret lab values and notify appropriate people with abnormal results.
  • Able to perform head to toe assessment on all patients per policy.
  • Maintains competencies to properly care for PATT patients.
  • Demonstrates timely and appropriate completion of documentation required by PATT.
  • Documents clearly and concisely patient information per policy.
Able to multi-task and maintain professional communication when under stress.

Patient Care:

  • Assists in the completion of the admission process as needed and may assist in the periodic assessment of the patient.
  • Documents findings and communicates all pertinent information to interdisciplinary team members as appropriate.
  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary team members in the development, evaluation, and revision of the plan of care as appropriate to meet the patients needs and goals.
  • May provide direct care and ensures the provision of a safe and comforting environment resulting in a high level of patient satisfaction.
  • Assists healthcare team members in the understanding of hospital policies and procedures.
  • Provides education to patients/families/significant other and to staff, incorporating age-specific criteria and assessment of readiness to learn.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Maintains standard precautions.
  • Administers medications and completes treatments according to hospital policy and within age-specific parameters.
  • Maintains all necessary documentation.
  • Facilitates discharge plan in collaboration with interdisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and ability to use necessary patient care equipment.
  • Coordinates response of the interdisciplinary team to emergency situations.
  • Responds to, reports and resolves patient complaints.
  • Ensures quality patient care through appropriate staff/patient assignments.
Performs Point of Care procedures in a timely manner according to established policy and procedure. Documents required information and complies with all Point of Care quality control standards.

  • Delegates appropriately to licensed and/or non-licensed staff in accordance with job descriptions, license requirements and standards of practice.

  • Assumes a leadership role in the maintenance of the patient-focused care delivery system.
  • Assists in directing and guiding staff in the coordination of unit operations.
  • Supports the multi-skilled worker environment (i.e., cross training).
  • Demonstrates a willingness to assist other areas of the hospital as needed.
  • Effectively demonstrates prioritization and time management skills.
  • Assists in all aspects of care in the environment as needed.
  • Coordinates emergency equipment readiness through daily checks.
  • Coordinates the tracking, availability and maintenance of unit equipment.
  • Coordinates proper temperature for medications storage through daily checks.
  • Oversees/assists/supports staff in the organization and stocking of both the Unit and patient rooms.
  • Maintains positive workflow by assigning meal times and break times.
  • Maintains appropriate nursing resources through flexible staffing.
  • Assists the Director by performing appropriate staff evaluations or by providing input when requested.
  • Assists the Director by performing appropriate disciplinary action when requested.
Assists in the investigation and resolution of narcotic discrepancies.

Preceptor Responsibilities:

  • Assists with recruiting and interviewing of competent staff.
  • Assists staff in problem solving work issues and in adapting to the patient-focused care environment.
  • Assists in the training of staff on hospital computer system.
  • Assists in the orientation, evaluation and retention of clinical staff.
Qualifications
  • Education: Graduate of an accredited professional nursing program required.
  • Licensure/Certification: Registered Nurse with current state licensure or licensure from a state within the Nursing Compact. BLS certification required within 30 days of placement in position. Certification is to be renewed by recommended renewal date on certification card.
  • Experience: Minimum of one year adult, critical care with an emphasis on cardiology/cardiovascular care.
  • Essential Technical/Motor Skills: Ability to manipulate various types of electronic and clinical equipment. Proficient in accessing and acquiring patient information from a variety of sources.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Must possess the ability to interact and communicate in English, both orally and written, with all levels of staff, physicians, patients, and families in an effective manner, exhibiting tact, enthusiasm and patience. Must be sensitive to cultural and bilingual issues.
  • Essential Physical Requirements: Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination. Must possess the ability to stand and walk for long periods of time and/or pull patients to transport and/or reposition them. Must also possess the ability to work under stressful conditions with frequent interruptions and irregular hours.
  • Essential Cognitive Abilities: Possesses the ability to comprehend and interpret complex clinical subject matter related to specialty and calculate in apothecary and metric systems for drug administration. Must possess the ability to document appropriate clinical information. Has the ability to interpret rules/regulations/accrediting and licensing standards sufficiently for implementation. Maintains concentration and organization while dealing with multiple issues. Possesses the ability to analyze data and formulate plan of action.
  • Essential Sensory Requirements: Possesses the ability to respond to patient/family and staff needs by interpreting verbal and non-verbal expressions.
  • Exposure to Hazards: Requires exposure to communicable diseases and potentially contaminated body fluids and hazardous materials. OSHA risk factor: Category I. Possible risk of physical injury due to moving machinery and supplies.
  • Other: Knowledgeable of the mission, vision and values of the hospital. Operates within the concept of patient focused care. Evolves into an effective team member. Must adhere to dress code, good grooming and personal hygiene habits.
