Reports to the Senior Manager, Toxicology, Regulated Applications and Business Process Optimization


Job dimensions

Based at Arkema's Corporate Offices and R&D Center, the Toxicologist provides oversight of outside laboratories and consultants regarding toxicology, ectotoxicology and environmental fate projects. Scope of the role includes:

  • Providing information and evaluations and serving as a primary resource on toxicology/ecotoxicology and environmental fate issues in areas of human health, environmental safety and regulatory compliance for Arkema products and processes.
  • Providing technical judgments to evaluate potential hazards that could have a direct effect on uses and commercialization schedules of new products and/or viability of current Arkema products.
  • Using critical reviews and evaluations to justify and/or defend product safety in a world-wide regulatory arena and legal proceedings.
  • Interacting with federal agencies, plant managers, business managers, and business unit presidents, product safety, research chemists, legal department, Arkema toxicologists (US and France), industry associations, and customers.


Key Activities and responsibilities

Specific job activities include (but are not limited to):

  • Use sound toxicological and scientific principles to advise Arkema management and persuade government agencies in the proper course of action for assessment of potential toxicological and environmental effects of Arkema products (10%)
  • Conduct hazard evaluations and develop OSHA HazCom GHS classifications for raw materials and final products to support generation of OSHA compliant SDSs and labels. 25%
  • Evaluate the impact of new information or new regulations on a product, and suggest strategies to manage issues that subsequently arise. Keep HES and business management informed of new information or proposals and the impact of these developments on aspects of the life cycle of the product, including manufacture, uses, transportation, and disposal. (10%)
  • Ensure that the toxicology/ecotoxicology programs use the current regulatory-required protocols, and sound data interpretation while considering regulatory changes in world-wide markets (10%)
  • Optimize program designs to maximize the acceptance of data and assessments in a global market (5%)
  • Mmonitor toxicology and ecotoxicology studies to ensure they meet regulatory requirements and business needs (10%)
  • Prepare risk and hazard assessments to support new chemical registration applications (ex. TSCA PMNs), new regulated applications for existing products, safety data sheets, product stewardship activities and global product safety summaries (20%)
  • Provide support to trade association panels regarding health or environmental effects issues dealing with our products (10%)


Context and environment

  • Supports the site HES policy and complies with all regulatory and internal requirements
  • Participates in HES activities provided by site management and Arkema Inc. (e.g., Behavioral Base Safety, SafeStart, etc.)
  • Supports and promotes the reporting of all health, safety, environmental, near-miss, accident or injury incidents


Required Education/Qualifications /Work experience

  • Ph.D. with 0-3 years or Masters with 5 years of equivalent experience in toxicology/ecotoxicology with in-depth technical experience in principles / theories / methods of toxicology testing, study management and complex risk assessments
  • Demonstrated skills in developing and maintaining technical testing and evaluation programs dealing with diverse and complex issues in a productive and consistent manner.
  • Knowledge of regulatory and environmental regulations and safety assessment procedures in major world markets, particularly GHS and new chemical registration requirements (REACH, TSCA, K-REACH, etc).
  • Competency in standard office software and competency in, or demonstrated potential to learn, specialized software applications. SAP experience preferred.

  • Ability to effectively navigate and work within a global and culturally diverse environment.
