What are the responsibilities and job description for the School Adjustment Counselor position at Arlington Middle School?
Under the direction of the School Principal and the Office of Student Support Services, the School Adjustment Counselor/School Social Worker will act as a liaison among family, school, and social agencies to obtain for families, individual children, and school personnel those services needed to help families support their children in a school setting.
The School Adjustment Counselor/School Social Worker will coordinate services within the school and home communities to assist students with issues that interfere with school functioning or attendance.
School Adjustment Counselor/School Social Worker provides mental health, behavioral health and academic support to students in grades PK-12, including direct and indirect support as consultation and collaboration with other members of the school community.
DUTIES ASSOCIATED WITH THIS POSITION INCLUDE:
• Provide mental health, behavioral and academic support to students GRADE LEVEL OF SCHOOL.
• Provide direct counseling services for identified students.
• Provide crisis management response and intervention outside of school hours as required.
• Provide consultation and support for faculty & staff to meet the needs of identified students, including managing student referrals from School Counselors.
• Manage student re-entry and transition from outside placements and hospitalizations.
• Serve on a student response team to manage the clinical needs of all students.
• Consult with outside resources when student needs expand beyond the services of the school adjustment counselor.
• Facilitate groups focused on adolescence, anxiety, depression, positive decision making, and other adolescent issues.
• Assist school leadership to assess and address student needs.
• Consult with school leadership regarding student behavior concerns and develop and facilitate the implementation of behavior plans as needed.
• Additional duties as assigned by the Principal and/or Office of Student Support Services.
COUNSELING SKILLS, ABILITIES, and KNOWLEDGE:
• Experience counseling students in an urban school preferred.
• Ability to speak Spanish strongly preferred.
• Knowledge of tiered systems of support including the delivery of Tier 1 SEL Curriculum and supports.
• Familiarity with the state and federal legal regulations governing special education, Section 504 and Section 51A
• Clinical experience with students experiencing social, emotional, or behavioral issues.
• Understanding of the impact of trauma on student learning and social emotional functioning.
• Understanding of behavior management techniques and methods including date collection, functional behavioral assessments, and implementing behavioral intervention plans if necessary.
• Citizenship, residency or work visa is required
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Three to five years of experience as a School Adjustment Counselor or School Social Worker preferred
• Proven organizational skills
• Excellent interpersonal relationship skills
• Demonstrated communication skills
• MA DESE Educator License – School Adjustment Counselor or School Social Worker
• Master’s degree
• Current authorization to work in the United States.
