Primary Position Objectives

The UWC-USA program - a two-year experience that integrates our Academic, Co-curricular, and Residential curricula - prepares students to serve as catalysts for greater unity, peace and sustainability in the world. We support students in the practice of our mission during their two years on campus and challenge them to live our mission for a lifetime..

The Community Engagement Manager contributes to the school's mission across the full program. Within the co-curricular program, the Community Engagement Manager leads the development and implementation of the Community Engagement curriculum, ensuring that they integrate our commitments to place-based and experiential education, peacebuilding and integral sustainability. The Manager is centrally responsible for ensuring that community partnerships are strong, and that the program provides UWC-USA with the opportunity to grow in their understanding of the complexities of community development work. Beyond the co-curricular program, the Manager supports other programming areas in formal or informal ways. They fulfill their responsibilities in accord with the UWC mission and values as well as the school's strategic plan, foundational documents, IBDP authorization, ISAS accreditation, best practices in experiential education, and best practices in teaching and learning.

The manager is also responsible for some logistical and administrative coordination of the IB CAS program, and as the person should be knowledgeable about the role of CAS in the Diploma Programme, as well as the relationship between CAS and UWC's deep commitment to experiential and expeditionary learning. The manager oversees registration, scheduling, and logistics for the program as a whole; oversees CAS data management and integration; reports the progress of students to the Dean of Teaching and Learning and IB Diploma Program (IBDP) Coordinator; and supports reporting requirements as required by the IBDP.

The Community Engagement Manager is employed on a 10-month agreement that runs from 1 August to 31 May and is paid over the course of 12 months. Their summer and winter holiday travel plans should not interfere with their professional obligations at the beginning of August, mid December, early January, and late May. This position is expected to support both Southwest Studies and Project Week each year.

Position Responsibilities

Community Engagement Management

  • Develops and integrates the Community Engagement curriculum with our commitments to expeditionary learning and place-based education
  • Develops and integrates the curriculum with our commitments to peacebuilding and integral sustainability, using community engagement to foster intercultural-and interpersonal
  • -dialogue in order to contribute to peaceful and just community
  • Shapes a vision for the long-term relationship between UWC-USA, as an anchor institution, and our immediately surrounding communities, so that students build a sense of their efficacy within broader frameworks
  • Supports students to develop effective reflection towards IB CAS requirements for Community Engagement (Service)
  • Supervises student groups and faculty sponsors focused on Community Engagement
  • Plans and monitors budgets related to Community Engagement
  • Oversees calendar, logistics and coordination and ensures back up plans for Community Engagement activities

IB CAS Program Administration

  • Designs and administers the CAS registration process for students
  • Educates students on all aspects of the CAS programme, including the meaning and purpose of the CAS learning outcomes
  • Coordinates the CAS schedule and logistics in conjunction with CAS leaders, including transportation, room reservations, and supplies/equipment as needed
  • Coordinates attendance tracking among CAS leaders and sponsors
  • Coordinates the student CAS interviews among CAS leaders and student advisors
  • Assigns and monitors student leaderships or CAS projects as needed
  • Periodically review students' CAS portfolios
  • Supports documentation as needed related to CAS portfolios, CAS reporting, and program costs/contracts and invoices
  • Reports completion/non-completion of CAS to the IB on IBIS
  • Helps coordinate and ensure continuity of program evaluation
  • Identifies safety issues (risk assessment and child protection)
  • Maintains CAS records and reports
  • Manages the CAS archives online
  • Plans and monitors budgets related to general CAS

Program Integration & Collaboration

  • Supports the Dean of Teaching and Learning in their effort to further integrate the co-curricular program with other elements of the IB curriculum
  • Collaborates with the Dean of Teaching and Learning and Expeditionary Learning Manager to integrate Community Engagement activities and the school's learning expeditions
  • Supports faculty's leadership of biweekly learning expeditions as needed
  • Manages the UWC CAS Portfolio, which includes leading the Capstone sessions dedicated to the portfolio
  • Supports students to develop effective reflection towards IB CAS requirements for Community Engagement (Service)
  • Develops and integrates the curriculum with our commitments to peacebuilding and integral sustainability, using community engagement to foster intercultural-and interpersonal
  • -dialogue in order to contribute to peaceful and just community
  • Propose, plan and execute Southwest Studies and Project Week trips annually
  • Writes periodic student reports as part of the school's formal evaluation process

UWC-USA Leadership

  • All UWC-USA employees are expected to provide varying levels of leadership in order to support the UWC mission. Examples include but are not limited to:
    • Facilitating the development and engagement of students as leaders and active allies practicing and delivering the UWC-USA mission
    • Actively participating and contributing to committee or task force assignments, providing leadership in campus-wide events or initiatives, strategic planning efforts, in the experiential education program, the dormitories, dining hall, and/or in physical plant initiatives.
    • Initiating strategic discussions and sharing thoughtful and innovative ideas with your co-workers for carrying out the UWC mission and successfully completing day to day work assignments
    • Demonstrating a growth mindset by believing and acknowledging that intelligence, skills, learning and creativity can all grow with time and experience
    • In all interactions, upholding the UWC mission and values, and creating an environment that promotes and values diversity, equity and inclusion

Position Qualifications

Required Experience & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Experience in experiential education
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills along with excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Experience with Google suite, Excel, PowerSchool, with excellent data management skills
  • Desire to contribute creatively and effectively to experiential education program to best reflect the UWC-USA mission and values

Desired Experience & Qualifications

  • Experience in teaching or residential life in a boarding school setting
  • Knowledge of the UWC-USA program strongly preferred
  • Experience leading students on off campus trips

Working Conditions

  • Regular weekday evenings and weekend days required
