Overview
In the U.S. Army, medical laboratory technicians, also known as medical laboratory specialists, are integral members of the medical laboratory technician team, who conduct tests on the tissue, blood, and bodily fluids of patients. Their work is crucial to the medical staff, as it aids doctors and nurses in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of disease and other medical disorders, as well as war wounds and injuries of Army personnel. 
 
You'll work alongside other medical professionals, and although you're not a doctor or nurse, your work is a key part of keeping the Army and its troops healthy.
 
Job Duties:
  •  Perform elementary blood banking and clinical laboratory procedures in hematology, immunohematology, clinical chemistry, serology, bacteriology, parasitology, and urinalysis.
  •  Collect blood specimens by venipuncture and capillary puncture.
  •  Pack, unpack, inspect, store and distribute blood and blood products.
  •  Assemble, disassemble and maintain laboratory equipment.

  • College ($4K in annual tuition assistance during military service and 100% tuition paid after service through the GI Bill, which also includes a monthly housing allowance and book stipends).
  • Student Loan Repayment - up to $65,000 in college loan repayment.
  • Veteran Affairs Loans (No money down home/business loans, fully comprehensive retirement benefits, and more).
 
This job REQUIRES enlistment into the U.S. Army.
 
Basic Qualifications: (What employee brings to the table)
  • Age - 17 to 34 years old
  • Education - Current Senior in High School(HS), HS Diploma, GED or higher.
  • Citizenship - U.S. Citizen/Permanent Resident.
  • Submit to the background and medical screening.

 Helpful Skills:
  • Interest in biology, chemistry, and algebra.
  • Ability to follow detailed procedures precisely.

Training
Job training for a medical laboratory specialist requires 10 weeks of Basic Combat Training and 52 weeks of Advanced Individual Training, including practice-testing specimens. 
 
Some of the skills you’ll learn are:
  • Medical laboratory procedures.
  • Study of human parasites and diseases.
  • Laboratory administration and record-keeping.
