MAIN FUNCTION:
Assists nursing staff by performing assigned functions of nursing care to patients under the direction of a licensed professional RN or LPN. Reports to Director of department to which assigned.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Quantity of Work
** 1. Under the supervision of RN/LPN, performs a variety of direct services to patients (See Attachment A).
** 2. Performs indirect services to patients which include but are not limited to:
- Inventorying of clothing and other personal belongings.
- Answering patient and visitor inquires, within limits established by Arnot Health policy.
- Preparing patient unit for admission of patients.
** 3. Is responsible for the environment of the assigned unit which include but is not limited to:
- Keeping patient’s room neat.
- Cleaning utility and treatment rooms, and appliances and cupboards in the kitchen.
- Defrosting refrigerator, as indicated.
- Cleaning special equipment.
- Cleaning and preparing instruments sets as instructed.
- Assisting with setup and with procedures as instructed and under the supervision of RN.
** 4. Is accountable for all patient care he/she gives and documents same.
** 5. Demonstrates age specific competency as per unit requirements.
** 6. Consistently demonstrates the ability to adapt to change in workload/assignments.
Quality of Care
** 7. Performs and completes assignments providing consistent quality and quantity of work. Sets priorities.
** 8. Demonstrates quality improvement principles in daily work.
** 9. Properly cares for equipment and utilizes supplies in a cost effective manner.
** 10. Functions with awareness of risk management and safety issues, and reports concerns appropriately.
Job Knowledge
** 11. Assumes personal responsibility for participating in ongoing education and skill development. Attends mandatory inservices. Must maintain a minimum of 6 contact hours every 6 months to maintain certification requirements.
** 12. Reviews employee handbook, revised policies and procedures, and bulletin board in order to maintain understanding of Arnot Health regulations and new relevant information.
** 13. Follows Arnot Health Standards Precaution and Transmission Specific Isolation policies/procedures.
** 14. Maintains a complete understanding of the Arnot Health emergency procedures and personal role in regard to fire safety, code blue and disaster procedures.

** 21. Observes Arnot Health policy concerning telephone usage, computer confidentiality, smoking regulations, language and other related rules governing conduct while at work.

** 22. Demonstrates reliability in the conscientious and complete manner in which work assignments are performed.
** 23. Demonstrates responsibility by reporting to work on time per assigned schedule. Provides timely notification for absence or tardiness.
** 24. Is flexible in work schedule to meet the needs of the unit.
** 25 Does not abuse sick time/unscheduled benefit time. Keeps absences within 3 for the year.
Personal Appearance and Hygiene
** 26. Observes uniform dress code and wears identification badge at all times. Badge is clearly visible to patients, visitors, and co-workers.
** 27. Consistently demonstrates acceptable personal hygiene.

EDUCATION:
High school graduate or equivalent. Completion of orientation and exam. Meets Arnot Health employment criteria.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Moderate physical effort required. Moderate weight objects lifted, reaching, stooping, bending. Ability to read and write required. Direct patient care tasks required. Required to be on feet much of time .
CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION (CPR) REQUIREMENTS:
Basic Life Support (BLS) required within 90 days of hire date.
INFECTION CONTROL:
Performs all aspects of Standard Precautions when engaging in patient care.
EXPOSURE CATEGORY:
Category I. Tasks that involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues.
