Job Title: DSP
Work site: Johnson County Developmental Services (JCDS)
Area of Focus: Developmental Services
Program(s): Home-Based Services (HBS)- Helps individuals living with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities to remain living in their family home or a home of their own while receiving services that help build their well-being, along with a monthly allocation that can be used to purchase services from authorized community agencies or Personal Support Worker of their choosing.
Immediate supervisor: Program Manager
Hours of work: Part-time, 25 hours/week
Shift: Monday – Friday, 12:00pm – 5:00pm
Minimum qualifications: High School Diploma or GED
Experience & Credential Requirements: Must be an authorized Direct Support Person; Able to pass the TABE test - reading at an eighth-grade level/or higher.
Special Requirements: Must be able to lift a minimum of 50lbs unassisted; Should be able to lift 195lbs with peer assistance or mechanical (Hoyer lift); at least 21 years of age; must complete required registry clearances and criminal fingerprint background checks; maintain CPR & First Aid Certification; maintain and provide proof of a valid driver's license and personal vehicle liability insurance. Some flexibility in hours based upon client needs in HBS.
Skills & Knowledge: Knowledge of local health and human services resources; Skilled in the understanding and delivery of habilitation services to adults with developmental disabilities; Knowledge of local health and human services resources; Excellent written and oral communication skills; Basic computer skills.
Job duties include, but are not limited to:
- Implements individual specific training programs as outlined in the ISP and assists in performing activities of daily living through which ISP objectives may be achieved.
- Implements the behavior intervention programs as written in the ISP and implements behavior intervention techniques as needed.
- Participates and instructs the individuals in the area of laundry, cleaning of residence / offices, cooking, vocational and personal self-care.
- Encourages community integration and inclusion by providing meaningful opportunities to work, go shopping, banking, attend social gatherings and or participate in other recreational activities.
- Writes, implements, completes response sheets, universal notes, vocational notes, recreational participation records, Behavior Incident Reports, Signs/Symptoms in a timely manner that reflect individual progress or noted issues.
- Prevents, recognizes, and intervenes in accordance with OIG Abuse/Neglect Rule 50 and health, safety, and infection control procedures to ensure clients are kept safe and secure.
- Provides transportation services to individuals when required as an integral part of the ISP. Must be capable of transferring individuals safely in/out of the vehicles safely and correctly while operating the vehicle or its adaptive equipment.
- Prepares meals by utilizing major and minor kitchen appliances, follows menus, and assists in feeding of individuals who are incapable of self-feeding.
- Capable of completing financial transactions for the purpose of money management within the established guidelines for the individuals and the home.
- Understands and administers first aid, CPR, and monitors/reports vitals as required and communicates the health status of clients to the Registered Nurse.
