What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director, Product Management position at Ascensus?

Section 1: Position Summary

The Director, Product Management position will primarily be responsible for managing the lifecycle and driving the performance of Ascensus’ State Facilitated Retirement business line. This role will be responsible for ownership of key products within the company, including platform enhancements, strategic product extensions, and the implementation of new functionality to our proprietary recordkeeping platform.  The position requires driving the definition and execution of product plans from vision, requirements, and initial design through market launch and rollout to production.   This position requires prior experience as a Product Manager within financial services, participant recordkeeping, or a similar field of work. Oversight of the Product Backlog for SFRP and management of product development activities related to the Backlog are key deliverables. In addition, this position requires external relationships with state partners, marketing divisions and field staff.

Section 2: Job Functions, Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for protecting, securing, and proper handling of all confidential data held by Ascensus to ensure against unauthorized access, improper transmission, and/or unapproved disclosure of information that could result in harm to Ascensus or our clients.

  • Assess new opportunities, technologies and trends, and competitive landscape to formulate strategies and plans for future product enhancements
  • Formulate and communicate the product vision based on market demand, customer/partner input, and making sound decisions on design tradeoffs
  • Create and maintain a product roadmap based on management goals and priorities
  • Provide product expertise and ongoing support to internal and external clients
  • Manage the Product Backlog recommend Backlog development activities to Product Development team
  • Support the relationship management and client service teams with product demonstrations and knowledge transfer sessions
  • Provide input on product positioning, pricing strategy, and competitive forces as part of product planning and rollout
  • Work with implementation managers to prioritize product enhancements, fixes, and partner/customer requests
  • Lead ACS’s Request for Proposal (RFP) and Request for Information (RFI) response efforts as it relates to the possible market expansion for its products
  • Assist with other tasks and projects as assigned
  • Communicate plans across teams to deliver on product initiatives.  Cross-functional business groups include Technology, Operations, Client Services, User Experience, Relationship Management, Marketing,  Legal, and Finance.
  • Work across teams to create the overall product design architecture.  Partner with technology teams to coordinate on all significant design decisions which impact the ultimate design, delivery, effectiveness, cost, or ease of use of a product.
  • Interface with ACS partners and third-party vendors to ensure adequate communication of product plans, features, and requirements. 
  • Guide multi-team and/or multi-vendor product efforts to successful completion

Section 3:  Experience, Skills, Knowledge Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree;  10 years of experience in financial services product management, particularly in the area of participant recordkeeping systems
  • Experience in cross-team collaboration to deliver successful products
  • Experience in working with partners and external third parties
  • Management experience a plus
  • 401k, 529, and or IRA experience a plus
  • Strong oral and written communication, design, planning, project management,  and decision making skills
  • Ability to operate effectively in a highly-focused, teamwork environment using a client focused philosophy
  • Strong analysis, decision making and problem-solving skills
  • Proven track record of managing a suite of products that have achieved success in the market as well as ability to work independently
