The dean of faculty supports the development of the moral character and civic virtue of teachers and their students in their pursuit of the True, Good, and Beautiful. He or she will support the mission and vision of Ascent Classical Academies and the ideals of classical, liberal arts education and its value in the development and formation of young people. As a leader in the school, the dean of faculty must have high moral character and embrace the virtues of a free and just society.

This administrator will assist the headmaster in overseeing and executing the academic and cultural mission of the school. As such, assigned tasks and projects will vary depending on campus needs and individual strengths and experience. The successful candidate will have experience in classical K-12 pedagogy and curriculum, coaching and mentoring teachers, and communicating the purpose of classical education to diverse audiences. The dean of faculty may also teach a class in a discipline of his or her strength.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Managing and overseeing the faculty
• Monitoring classroom instruction
• Ensuring fidelity to the academic program
• Developing improvements to the academic program in alignment with the school’s mission and vision, and direction from the headmaster, and Ascent Home Office
• Tracking and reviewing lesson plan submissions
• Supporting and developing faculty department heads
• Overseeing internal and mandated assessments, tracking, reviewing, and utilizing the results
• Mentoring teachers and teacher assistants of all experience levels
• Developing, coordinating, and implementing professional development
• Conducting teacher observations and evaluations with a focus on pedagogy and curriculum
• Assisting the headmaster to ensure teaching talent acquisition and retention
• Maintain regular, punctual attendance
• Maintain a professional appearance and adhere to relevant health and safety procedures

Minimum Job Requirements:

• Bachelor's degree (masters preferred)
• 8-10 years of K-12 teaching experience within formal or non-formal settings
• Ability to mediate difficult situations
• Experience with developing teachers
• Experience with supporting teachers with student and parent relationships in a K-12 setting
• Strong ability to speak and write clearly
• Thorough understanding of classical pedagogy and philosophy
• Exceptional organizational skills
• Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, and the ability to effectively articulate information and issues
• Understanding of Ascent Classical Academy’s mission and vision and a commitment to the growth and expansion of Classical Education
• Eligibility to work in the United States
• After an offer is accepted, a satisfactory background check as required by state law and the South Carolina Department of Education
• Dedication to the value of a rigorous liberal arts education
