Since 1961, ASPIRA of New York, the founding ASPIRA organization, has been dedicated to serving New York City youth and their families, providing opportunities that would otherwise not be available to them, and serving as an effective advocate, fighting to improve education in the Puerto Rican, Latino, and diverse communities. In the 50 years since it was organized by a group of concerned community leaders led by Dr. Antonia Pantoja – a 1996 Presidential Medal of Freedom Awardee - ASPIRA of New York has served thousands of New York City children, youth, parents, schools, and other community-based agencies, establishing a record of providing high quality, comprehensive programs and services.
Position Overview: ASSISTANT PROGRAM DIRECTOR
ASPIRA currently administers more than 20 programs in NYC public schools, serving nearly 6000 students, the majority of which come from low-to-moderate income households. The Assistant Program Director will be responsible for supporting the Program Director in the overall operation of the afterschool program. The Assistant Program Director will assist the Program Director in helping to coordinate and manage services for program participants in ASPIRA programs.
Responsibilities
- Assist the Program Director with all aspects of administrative, programmatic, and the day-to-day operations of the program.
- Provide overall program supervision in the absence of the Program Director.
- Responsible for program data input, including enrollment, rate of participation, and student attendance, performance and progress among other outcomes and success indicators.
- Train, supervise, and provide feedback to program staff and volunteers; provide direction and support to program staff, including identifying areas for professional development.
- Conduct bi-weekly staff meetings and perform weekly observations of program activities; attend meetings and trainings as directed by the Program Director and Managing Director.
- Assist in the development and serve as Chairperson of a youth advisory board; lead and identify opportunities for student engagement and provide support and/or guidance to students in an appropriate manner.
- Promote program activities and events via bulletin boards, signs, posters, flyers, word of mouth and other appropriate channels of communication; handle the logistics of planning culminating events, field days, field trips, and other program events and activities.
- Prepare periodic and ad hoc reports that measure program outcomes; facilitate special projects and manage sub-contracted programs.
- Enforce policies and procedures governing program staff and participants.
- Maintain program staff compliance documents and ASPIRA physical property log; requisition supplies and equipment based on program needs and utilizing program funds in a discretionary manner.
- Perform other duties and tasks as deemed necessary by the Program Director and Managing Director.
Requirements
- Associate’s Degree in a relevant field and/or 2-3yrs experience providing services to youth in grades K-8 required; Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
· Must have 2-3yrs previous experience working in a youth development role, academic or recreation setting, including at least 1-2yrs experience supervising program staff.
· Dedicated to ASPIRA of NY’s programs educational and youth development goals.
· Must be willing to learn aspects of program development, new strategies and best practices to inspire students to be positive, thoughtful and motivated to work hard and take risks.
· Ability to manage projects, work well under pressure, adapt to changing priorities, and balance competing deadlines highly desired.
· Must be able to build positive meaningful relationships with program staff and program participants; team player excited about the opportunity to work in an environment dedicated to the growth and development youth.
· Knowledge of New York State Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS) School-Age Child Care (SACC) policies & procedures a plus.
· Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional weekends and evenings.
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills in addition to strong interpersonal skills.
· Strong administrative and organizational skills, including an intermediate level computer skills.
· Demonstrated proficiency in technology; familiar with Google suite and apps a plus.
- Must pass pre-employment background investigation including but not limited to employment history and criminal background check
- · Must be adaptable to the work environment such as hybrid program model availability: onsite and remote including ability to work from home or other non-school site location readily and throughout the day.
- · Must be remote access prepared which includes: including web/internet/broadband accessibility and reliable cell phone devices equipped for texting and talking.
- · Must possess and be able to maintain throughout the assignment; the technology (hardware, software, internet access and working cell phone) required to perform the duties of the position including communications with supervisor and other staff members.
- · Physical requirements including ability to wear all PPE required, climb stairs, lift children, perform CPR, communicate by voice, monitor and evaluate events visually and aurally.
- · As an essential worker it is expected at this time, that you have schedule flexibility based on State, Local and Federal pandemic management conditions and requirements (e.g. school closures, training, emergency orders)
_Assistant Program Director will be required to report to the school building and interact with staff, students, parents and school administration while following DOH Covid-19 guidelines such as wearing PPE and remaining socially distant. ASPIRA will follow the updated CDC and DOE protocols for "School-based" staff. Fully vaccination is required. _
