What are the responsibilities and job description for the Data Scientist position at Assurant?
The Data Scientist is responsible for using analytical techniques to solve complex business problems. This role will be a part of the industrial automation team and work alongside senior team members to leverage machine learning tools that advance Assurant’s global business. The Data Scientist will present findings to the business and must be comfortable communicating to all levels of the organization
What will be my duties and responsibilities in this job?
- Develop and maintain artificial intelligence/machine learning models.
- Devises new algorithmic approaches to solving difficult quantitative problems using large scale data sources
- Analyze and interpret large and complex datasets from both relational and non-relational sources using statistical analysis techniques
- Communicate findings and recommendations to stakeholders through effective data visualization and reporting
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand business requirements and translate them into data-driven solutions. Cross-functional teams include but are not limited to software engineering, product management, and industrial automation.
- Stay up-to-date with the latest developments in machine learning and data science, and apply them to real-world applications.
- Provides feedback to product and engineering teams on artificial intelligence/machine learning solution design and development and communicate the approach and implementation
- Works independently with mentorship from senior team members and/or leadership of the Data Science team on leveraging existing frameworks and models for known use cases around machine learning
What are the requirements needed for this position?
- Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills, and the ability to apply them to real-world business problems.
- A passion for staying up to date with the latest developments in data science
- Experience in creating artificial intelligence and machine learning models
- A bachelor’s or master’s degree in a quantitative field such as Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, or Mathematics.
- Experience in accessing and performing complex queries on relational and non-relational data sets
- Strong programming skills in an analytical programming language and their associated frameworks like R, Python, Julia, or MATLAB.

What other skills/experience would be helpful to have?
- Experience in sklearn, PyTorch, and TensorFlow
- Understanding of Data Engineering principles
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
- Ability to effectively communicate at all levels in the organization
- Experience in data analysis that includes translating insights into recommendations
- Experience with data storytelling and distilling complex information into understandable ideas
- Ability to work independently on all project types
- Experience in performing statistical analyses, such as predictive modeling, time series analysis, exploratory data analysis, segmentation and cluster analysis, retention, etc
