What are the responsibilities and job description for the Manager, Distance Learning position at ASTHO?

Summary: Under the supervision of the Director of Education and Learning Services, the Distance Learning Manager oversees the logistics and delivery of purposeful learning programs and instructional strategies under a hybrid lens (mix of live and virtual) for external organizational members.


Principal Functions:

  • Manage logistics and delivery of real-time and on-demand learning events (including webcasts, webinars, virtual conferences, hybrid learning events, and other pre-recorded presentations).
  • Keep all project stakeholders informed throughout project life cycle: pre-event, live-event, and post-event.
  • Review and manage vendor contracts and independent contractor agreements.
  • Quickly solve problems and make quick decisions during the production of live events.
  • Develop and maintain organizational training material and communication to ensure ASTHO staff have knowledge of training and development events and resources.
  • Schedule and manage the dress rehearsal / run-through for events, making recommendations on flow and format best practices.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Education and Learning Services to develop new and innovative ways to implement and support ASTHO members.
  • Develop timelines, organizational plans, and internal communications for all online learning events, especially multi-session, and hybrid structured events.
  • Consult with project teams and/or external clients to conceptualize and design learning event strategy and flow based on their needs.
  • Measure, track, and report results from online learning events with recommended actions and post-event reporting.
  • Provide extraordinary support services focused on educational excellence and optimal event experience.
  • Lead the ASTHO webinar series by refining presenter content, hosting/scheduling webinars, and posting/maintaining webinar content on ASTHO platforms, and providing guidance for presenters.
  • Supervise the Training Specialist. Supervisory responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, training, providing ongoing feedback, assessing work products, and implementing HR policies and procedures.
  • Liaise with IT, Communications, Design, Meetings, Engagement, and any other relevant internal staff team to assist in the successful promotion of distance learning and hybrid events.
  • Serve as point of contact and subject matter expert to clients, and internal team members.
  • Keep current on trends and changes within the virtual event industry to improve the quality of ASTHO produced events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred.
  • 4 years in a management/leadership role with live training delivery/planning experience.
  • Experience planning and executing virtual learning events.

  • Excellent written/oral communication skills with a positive mindset.
  • Demonstratable planning competency, ability to prioritize work and strong time management skills.
  • Ability to explain complex technical features and present to external and internal clients.
  • Ability to multi-task and remain calm under pressure while having a professional phone/web presence.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team is required.
  • Active Listening — Give full attention to what other people are saying, take time to understand the points being made and ask questions as appropriate.
  • Experience working for membership association and/or government officials is preferred.
  • Ability to manage large multi-layered projects including measures of success, forecasting, and evaluation.
