Astoria School District No. 1C is seeking applicants for the following position:
JOB TITLE: Instructional Assistant (Title 1) - 6.5 hrs/day - Grades 3rd-5th Lewis & Clark Elementary
REPORTS TO: Site Administrator/Teacher
EVALUATED BY: Site Administrator
JOB SUMMARY:
Under direct supervision of a licensed teacher, performs a variety of tasks assisting the teacher in the development of an instructional program by working with students individually or in small/large groups; prepare instructional materials, maintain classroom discipline and conduct planned activities using teacher-designated methods and materials: some positions require aptitude and skills in working with particular disabilities or learning needs.
QUALIFICATIONS OF POSITION:
- High School Diploma or equivalent as required by OAR 581-37-030, Oregon Department of Education
- Must be 18 years of age
- May be required to obtain a First Aid and/or CPR card
- Must be able to pass a background check
- Job-related experience is preferred
- Must be able to pass a fingerprint/background check
- Ability to maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students and staff
- Ability to work professionally with others and to communicate effectively (both orally and in writing) with students and staff
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
- Ability to supervise individual/groups of students in an instructional setting without constant teacher oversight; work in a team situation
- Ability to work effectively in an environment which can be both physically and emotionally fatiguing; perform physically demanding requirements of the job
- Ability to work with students who may exhibit aggressive behavior, as required of specific job assignment
- Possess knowledge of English usage, mathematics, and a basic understanding of the subjects in which this position is to provide assistance
- Perform physical requirements which may include:
- Moderate degree of physical stamina
- Frequent standing, walking, bending
- Occasional lifting up to 50 lbs
- Physically restraining a student as needed (OIS Certification provided), per building need.
- Possible exposure to bodily fluids in assisting students with using restrooms and tending to illness or injury (Blood Borne Pathogen training provided)
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist teachers in the planning and implementing of learning experiences of students enrolled in programs; confer with teacher to provide feedback on student performance, progress and testing activities
- Assist the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on a sympathetic understanding of individual students, their needs, interests and abilities
- Assist in instruction of students in a group or one-on-one settings, often without direct teacher supervision; temporary modification of lesson plans or teaching strategies during instructional activity as necessary to achieve IEP goals and objectives as directed by a teacher
- Provide for the identified physical needs of students such as toileting, feeding, therapy and other related needs
- Assist in monitoring classroom management in accordance with the District’s discipline procedures, which may include physical movement, lifting and carrying of students, per building needs
- Supervise students inside and outside of the classroom with an understanding of and provision for a safe environment
- Perform various clerical functions in student record keeping, monitoring assignments, IEP development, maintaining accurate files and other related functions
- Work in a variety of settings as needed to accommodate changing individual needs. Could include working with student(s) in community settings
- Assist with the supervision and safety of students during emergency drills, assemblies and unstructured periods
- Check notebooks, correct papers, supervise testing and make-up work as assigned by the teacher
- Inform and help substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular teacher
- Participate in in-service/programs and meetings as assigned
- Acts as a mandated abuse reporter
- Knowledge of Astoria School District Policies and building procedures
- Regular and acceptable attendance is required
- Performs other duties as assigned

SALARY RANGE: $20.82 min/Hourly (Bilingual $22.05/Hourly)
