Overnight Hosts: Astoria Warming Center
Positions are from approximately November 15th-March 15th
This is an awake, overnight position supervising the safety of a low barrier emergency shelter throughout the night. Schedule will be in shifts between 6:30 pm and 9:00 am. Several positions are available on different shifts and days of the week. These are part time, temporary positions that are $17/hr ($15/hr, with an additional $2/hr hazard pay added throughout the duration of COVID.)
- Provides intake, crisis intervention, and de-escalation/problem solving for guests.
- Provides orientation, training and supervision of volunteer hosts on shift.
- Enforces all safety guidelines, as well as quiet time. Makes decisions regarding guests’ stay to ensure the safety of the center.
- Maintains nightly statistics and logs.
- Conducts regular rounds of all sleeping and common areas.
- Acts as point of contact with police or EMS during emergency situations.
- Notifies Center Coordinator, Community Resources Coordinator or Executive Director of supply needs and other observations, suggestions, or concerns.
- Ensures cleanliness of the shelter, including bathrooms and eating areas. Supervises and assists in morning clean up and closure of the shelter space.
- Assists in providing bus tickets and resource information and referral.
- Other relevant duties during shift as assigned
Qualifications:
Strong interpersonal skills, good organizational, written and verbal communication skills
The ability to be non-judgmental; and to work effectively with diverse populations, including persons with chemical dependency and mental health challenges. Experience working in low barrier services/ harm reduction models preferred.
The ideal person for this position will be flexible and adaptable, with the ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
A strong understanding of crisis intervention and de-escalation skills, as well as an understanding of the intersection of trauma and homelessness, or a willingness to learn is necessary for this position.
Knowledge of local community resources is a plus.
