Job Description

The Optical Network Engineer - Provisioning is the focal point for all internal and external orders required to maintain the network with one of our top clients which is a global social technology company. This position requires the ability to work independently with a high level of accuracy and attention to details.

Scope: 

  • Applies company policies and procedures to resolve a variety of issues
  • Works on problems of moderate scope
  • Receives general instructions on routine work and detailed instructions on new projects

Your Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Deploy, configure, and support a large-scale production and corporate network and server infrastructure in data centers, Point of Presence (POP), edge, backbone, datacenter, and content delivery network (CDN) infrastructure.
  • Provide onsite network support and expertise on local data center campus and remote support for POP sites while working with local vendor support staff.
  • Schedule and perform network maintenance, repair, and upgrade tasks as needed while limiting the impact on the production network.
  • For POP sites, submit the dark fiber cross-connect request with demarcation information to the 3rd Party co-location provider via email or vendor/provider portal.
  • Validate the integrity of LOA information (e.g., floor, rack, circuit ID, cage) prior to provide to the partner. 
  • Work with 3rd party co-location providers to Engineer, Furnish and Install diverse tie cables and patch panels connecting to the POP site MMR.
  • Work with 3rd party cable manufacturers to Engineer, Furnish and Install armored trunk multi-fiber bundles to be delivered between the client ODF(s) and customer equipment rack(s).
  • Act as a point of escalation for on-site testers and installers when issues arise.
  • Calculate and document equipment power requirements and work with Engineering, Facilities Operations, and/or collocation vendors to meet these requirements.
  • Work closely with Network Engineering, Logistics, and equipment vendors as new equipment and technologies are integrated into the production network. 
  • Work with network provisioning engineers to turn up new circuits and engage and escalate with vendors to troubleshoot out-of-service or faulty circuits.
  • Queue Management for tasks and incidents, participate in ongoing DC/POP deployment projects.
  • Use internal tools and scripts to configure, monitor, and repair servers and network equipment.
  • Develop internal documentation and conduct training as needed or appropriate.
  • Proactively contribute to documentation, automation, and processes as they evolve.
  • Follow, improve, and implement data center and POP best practices.
  • Participate in on call activities and follow escalation process to support the infrastructure 24/7.

Qualifications

Location:  Applicant must be in a commutable location to Boston, MA. This role will eventually be 100% onsite when Return to Office is declared.

COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement: In order to protect the health and safety of all onsite employees, proof of full vaccination including booster is required.

  • Bachelor of Science in Telecommunications engineering or related technical field
  • In depth knowledge and experience of major DWDM platforms (Ciena)
  • 5 years of optical operations experience.
  • Fluent in either Spanish or Portuguese in addition to English - Preferred.
  • Knowledge of Fiber-optic technology including cable types, connector types, optic types, and optical transport technologies.
  • Experience in analyzing situations, troubleshooting, systems and tools, and problem solving.
  • Functional knowledge of DWDM transport/transmission networks as well as transceivers.
  • Knowledge of Optical network deployment, commissioning, decommissioning, configuration, integration and rehome.
  • Understanding of POP infrastructure, being familiar with concepts such as MMR, cross connect, peering, cage, patch panel, ODF.
  • Solid understanding of fiber optic technology including cable types, connector types, optic types, patch panels, and optical transport technologies.
  • Experience in ordering cross connects as well as local patches.
  • Experience in Edge capacity provision and decommission.
  • Experience in network optimization (re-stripes, migrations, capacity upgrades).
  • Strong attention to detail with excellent time management and organization skills.
  • Excellent experience in maintaining documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze complex situations and utilize troubleshooting skills, systems and tools, and creative problem-solving abilities under pressure.
  • Ability to interact with external peers and vendors, as well as with other teams within the organization.
  • Programming and scripting capabilities are strongly desired.
  • Excellent communication skills.
