Our Certified Peer Support Specialist will be an integral part of the MIYA Program. The Mobile Intervention for Young Adults (MIYA) Program delivers comprehensive, mobile services and supports to youth during their transition out of the social service system into a community. The MIYA Program engages youth and young adults in decision-making and problem-solving processes for all aspects of their life. The program works closely with the individual’s family and natural supports to assist them with meeting their individual goals for recovery. This program serves Allegheny County HealthChoices/Medical Assistance eligible youth and young adults ages 18 to 25 years, with a primary serious emotional/behavioral disorder (SE/BD) or serious mental illness (SMI)
MIYA takes a clinical and skill development approach to assist youth and young adults to develop critical adaptive skills needed to negotiate, establish, and adapt to independent living in the community. MIYA helps individuals capitalize on opportunities to self-determine what they need to lead a meaningful life in the community, including choosing where to live, learn, work and socialize.
Key Objectives of this Role
- Role models competency in recovery and on-going coping skills through developing relationships with the individual and their informal and formal supports.
- Provided essential expertise and consultation to other team members in promoting a recovery-oriented cultural and practice of service provision and in understanding the clients’ perspective and subjective experience.
- Provides WRAP and Mental Health Advance Directive planning, mobility training, assistance with life skills, and help with social, interpersonal relationship, and leisure time activities, as needed.
- Functions autonomously and uses appropriate judgment in problem solving day-to-day crisis situations, utilizing on-call clinical staff or supervisory support when appropriate
Qualifications
Skills and Qualifications:
- Must be aged 18-25 who is or has a lived experience as a recipient of mental health, behavioral, and/or drug and alcohol services and/or has experienced traumatic events/circumstances, including homelessness and abuse; and has sought recovery. Individuals must be willing to disclose their “peer” status.
- Must either currently have Peer Specialist Certification or obtain Peer Specialist Certification upon graduation of the Certified Peer Specialist Training within 6 months of date of hire (Auberle will support and fund this process)
- Progressed in own recovery and be comfortable sharing your story of recovery.
- Must have a basic understanding of staging client’s readiness for change as well as recovery principles
- Understands and supports a trauma informed System of Care
- Must have a basic understanding of mental health, behavioral health, and co-occurring disorders conditions or substance use that interfere with activities of daily living and mental health awareness
- Ability to engage effectively with others, strong work ethic, flexibility, and interest in taking on new challenges
- Must have obtained a High School Diploma or Equivalency
- Ownership of a reliable vehicle, a valid driver’s license, and proof of insurance required
- ACT 33/34 and FBI Clearances
- Random drug testing as applicable
