Job Summary
The Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine (AUCVM) is seeking candidates for the position of Chief Canine Instructor in the Detection Canine Science, Innovation, Technology and Education (DCSITE) program

The Auburn University DCSITE program will serve as the primary academic resource to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for expertise in all areas of detection canine sciences. The DCSITE program will integrate best scientific practices in analytical chemistry, genetics, genomics, reproduction, veterinary and sports medicine, olfactory neuroscience, behavior and cognition, metrology, and engineering to advance detection canine sciences. This is a five (5) year limited term position. Continuation of employment is contingent upon availability of funding.
Provides technical and supervisory support for the Auburn University Detection Canine Science, Innovation, Technology and Education (DCSITE) program

Essential Functions
1. Assists in the development and implementation of classroom and field training curricula, methods, and techniques.
2. Recommends modifications to update or improve existing courses or course presentation.
3. Performs quality assurance inspections and provides evaluative reports of training activities.
4. Oversees training aids for the DCSITE program.
5. Evaluates prospective canines for participation in program.
6. Full supervisory responsibility for other employees is a major responsibility and includes training, evaluating, and making or recommending pay, promotion or other employment decisions.

  • Knowledge of principles of conditioning and canine behavior and their applications to detection dog training
  • Ability to evaluate green dogs for phenotypic traits critical for training in the detection of certain threat targets and operational environments
  • Experience in training “green dogs” (i.e. dogs with no previous detection training) for detection of multiple target types applicable towards a broad range of threats
  • Ability to operate in a research and data driven environment which involves constant advancement in ones training and operational philosophies in order to develop and improve canine technologies
  • Ability to work with a diverse team of subject matter experts across academia, government, and private industry which will involve the execution of scientific methods developed by the team for research projects on a variety of canine technology topics
  • Excellent communication skills to interact with scientists, government program managers, industry experts, and end users for research projects and technology transfer
  • Extensive knowledge of federal, state, and local government canine operations
  • Experience in planning and executing detection canine team training seminars and detection canine assessment/certification events
  • Ability to train/teach/instruct/evaluate canine handler teams in various operational environments to include transit systems and large event venues
  • Capability to perform extensive travel to conduct detection canine seminars and evaluations
  • Attention to detail, excellent record keeping skills and experience with electronic programs such as Microsoft office suite.
  • Strong leadership experience in managing a team, providing training, instruction and supervision
