Northern Nevada State Veterans Home is seeking a Full Time Maintenance Director. Come help us keep our Veterans Home Safe and Beautiful!
Summary/Objective: Ensure the building(s), equipment and utilities are maintained in good working order and
facility grounds are properly maintained in accordance with facility policies and state and Federal Regulations.
Essential Functions

Department Functions:
Responsible for overall maintenance of facility and maintenance budget. Responsible for
preventative maintenance and repairs inside and outside the facility to provide a safe, attractive and
orderly environment. Perform minor repairs and supervise the day-to-day repair, improvement and preventative
maintenance of the building, equipment, lawn and grounds; arrange for and manage outside repair,
maintenance and construction services according to procedures.
o Make rounds and assess needs within the facility.
o Supervise maintenance staff and security in the day-to-day facility operations of assigned areas. Make job
assignments and set priorities. Orient new staff and participate in recruitment and selection.
Communicate policies, assist and coach as needed.
o Monitor work assignments, provide feedback, evaluate performance and discipline as needed.
o Maintain records, manage budgets and supplies, and fulfill department head responsibilities.
o Ensure equipment and work areas are clean, safe and orderly; and strict adherence to procedures
regarding cleaners or hazardous materials or objects; ensure Universal Precautions and infection
control, isolation, fire, safety and sanitation practices and procedures are followed; and promptly
address any hazardous conditions and equipment.
o Assist other as requested and function as a working supervisor in all areas of responsibilities as the
departments’ budgeted hours and work-load require
o Conduct preventative maintenance as assigned to include but not be limited to facility logs such as
water temperature, call lights, generator and fire alarms.
o Hire, train and coach new associates.
o Ensure work schedules are followed and coordinate services with other departments.
o Advise Administrator of supply and/or repair needs.
o Understand and comply with State and Federal rules and regulations that govern the practices within
the facility.
  • Observe and practice safety according to facility policy and procedure:
o Able to explain and demonstrate fire/emergency procedures and must participate in any emergency
or drill activities.
o Properly use and maintain facility equipment, reporting/taking out of service any equipment with
breakage or needed repairs.
o Show respect for facility property.
o Question and seek clarification of unclear orders
.
  • Customer Service:
o Establish and maintain positive interactions with internal and external customers, including co-
workers.
o Present a professional appearance.

Resident Rights:
o Know Resident Rights. Helps the residents/residents exercise and/or protect their rights.
o Report resident/resident complaints to management.
o Maintain confidentiality of resident/resident information.
o Understand, comply with and promote all rules and regulations regarding residents’ rights.

• HIPAA:
o Follow and adhere to Facility’s policies and procedures implementing HIPAA requirements for
the privacy and security of protected health information.
o Use and/or disclose only minimum amount of Protected Health Information necessary to
complete assigned tasks.
o Report all suspected violation of company’s HIPAA policies or procedures to Facility Privacy
Designee.

• Continuing Education:
o Participate in orientation, facility/department in-services and quality improvement activities.
o Attend facility/department/staff meetings as required.

  • Safety:
o Know and follow all Company policies, regulations and requirements.
o Practice and promote adherence to institutional safety codes.
o Follow facility dress and hygiene policies.
o Demonstrate proper use of equipment. Reports equipment needs or repairs.
o Follow facility smoking policies.
o Report and document any incidents or accidents of residents, staff or visitors to the appropriate
facility personnel.
o Report all hazardous conditions/equipment to Supervisor.
o Perform duties, which may include transportation of residents, as assigned in Facility Disaster
Plan
o Zero tolerance for harassment and violence.
o Meet the general health requirements set for by the company and this facility.

Other Responsibilities
  • Must adhere to Code of Conduct and Business Ethics policy, including documentation and reporting
responsibilities.

  • Other duties as assigned or needed.
  • Ability to understand and apply training from in-service education and ability to instruct personnel during
training education and staff meetings.
  • This position regularly requires long hours and frequent weekend work.
  • This is a position in a health care facility open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Rotating shifts as well as
holiday and working during inclement weather may be required.


This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as
computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
Physical Demands:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully
perform the essential functions of this job.
  • The responsibilities of this position involve significant physical activities and the ability to work at a
rapid pace for an entire shift.
  • Must be able to climb and maintain balance on ladders.
  • Walking, standing, reaching, lifting, bending, crouching, stooping, grasping, climbing, pushing, pulling
and twisting. Lifting and moving objects up to 50 pounds unassisted.
  • Must have finger and hand dexterity sufficient to type, handle and manipulate instruments and tools, and
to operate department equipment. Must be able to use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with
hands and arms.
  • All employees of skilled nursing facilities may be required to provide lifting and transfer assistance to
residents. Lifting and/or transferring some residents will require use of a lifting device and /or assistance
of other staff.
  • Have a working understanding of English: ability to read and write; ability to understand and follow
written and oral instructions; ability to hear and verbally communicate with residents and others; ability
to hear and respond to pages.
  • Ability to distinguish smells, tastes and temperatures.

Required Education and Experience
  • Related experience at a level necessary to accomplish the job.
  • Ability to adapt to a flexible work schedule.
  • Ability to relate positively, effectively and appropriately with residents, families, community members,
volunteers and other facility staff.
  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand English, and be able to follow oral and written directions at a
level necessary to accomplish the job.
  • Must be willing to assist others, including co-workers.
  • Must maintain regular attendance.
  • Meet all health requirements, as required by law.
  • Demonstrate basic computer knowledge with the ability to learn company documentation software and to
use e-mail.

Preferred Education and Experience
  • Previous health care maintenance experience preferred.
  • Previous supervisory experience preferred
