Axle is seeking a highly ambitious, adaptable, structured, and detail-oriented Laboratory Technician to join our vibrant team at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) supporting the National Cancer Institute (NCI) located in Bethesda, MD.
Overall Position Summary and Objectives IDEAS is a central, on-campus, engineering resource for the NIH Intramural Research Program (IRP). IDEAS staff work closely with IRP collaborators to develop novel technologies for laboratory and clinical research. The majority of SPIS activities require first-of-a-kind instrumentation design, software development (both for instrument control and signal analysis), in-house fabrication, and overall collaborative validation in laboratories and clinics. IDEAS is looking for a proactive candidate to assume responsibility for our engineering laboratories and fabrication capabilities, as well as work with our engineers in fabricating, assembling, testing, installing, and debugging a wide range of devices and systems.

- Work products and documents related to the design and fabrication of high quality electronic, mechanical, electro-mechanical and optical instruments in support of research activities. - Weekly
- Work products and documents related to the design and fabrication of component parts or specialized tooling fixtures as required for fabricating parts and assemblies. - Weekly
- Work products and documents related to CAD design for individual components and assemblies, solid modeling and drawing creation utilizing Solidworks. - Weekly
- Work products and documents related to CAD design for electronic schematics and printed circuit board layouts using Altium. - Weekly
- Work products and documents to the education and verification of staff safety compliance for general lab and specific machines - Weekly
Work Details:
- Plans, executes, and arranges laboratory experiments, new techniques, and procedures; and performs laboratory techniques relating to scientific research
- Fabricate and assemble electrical, optical, and mechanical designs 2
- Operates laboratory machines and instruments; and prepares specimens and equipment for use
- Operate and maintain machinery, such as circuit board plotter, 3D printers, CNC mill, laser cutter, and other fabrication equipment 3
- Performs sample management and storage.
- Perform processing and analysis of samples
- Analyzes, documents and reports on all procedures performed
- Ensure efficient lab operations, including maintenance, organization, and inventory
- Maintains inventory of laboratory supplies.
- Ensure that supplies and consumables are ready and on hand as necessary for maximum efficiency in the laboratory
- Cleans and sterilizes instruments, glassware and equipment
- Ensure that adequate clean inventory is available for immediate usage
- Perform routine experiments and tests; follow established procedures and protocols
- Maintains inventory of laboratory supplies and initiates purchase orders
- Inventory laboratory supplies and equipment, make recommendations and prepare purchase requests
- Performs routine equipment maintenance
- Monitor equipment performance and maintenance schedules
- Troubleshoot electronic, optical, and mechanical systems and devices
- Design and implement small electronic and or mechanical devices and systems 5
- Analyzes, documents and reports on all procedures performed and produces detailed reports for use by senior staff
- Prepare reports and summaries based on results and findings
- Performs advanced equipment maintenance.
- Monitor equipment performance and maintenance schedules
- Trains staff in performing routine laboratory tests and procedures
- Assist engineers with testing, installation, andor debugging of systems 4
- Educate/ensure staff safety compliance for general lab and specific machines
- Provides insights and expertise and recommends new strategies and approaches
- Interact with NIH campus investigators and trainees on biomedical research projects
- Serve as point-person for laboratory meetings and work resulting from impromptu visits from NIH campus staff
