About this role: Wells Fargo is seeking a Chief Communications Officer The Public Affairs organization is comprised of five interrelated teams: Communication manages strategic internal, external, and executive communications for Wells Fargo. The team delivers world-class communications counsel and content to stakeholders in ways that build trust while protecting and enhancing the company’s reputation and culture. Brand Management team ensures Wells Fargo's brand and marketing success by bringing Wells Fargo's brand to life through experiences, events, and product/service identities. Social Impact leads the development of strategic initiatives and corporate commitments to drive positive, innovative social impact, and enhance Wells Fargo's reputation in our local communities. This team is responsible for the Wells Fargo Foundation, community relations, employee volunteerism, employee charitable giving and disaster response. Sustainability leads the development of strategic initiatives and corporate commitments on sustainability, manages critical environmental and social issues, and enhances Wells Fargo's reputation as a leader in Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) performance. This team is responsible for the Wells Fargo climate initiative, impact investing, and integrating sustainability, human rights, social justice, and equity considerations throughout the company. Government Relations & Public Policy leads the company’s engagement with policy makers and leaders at the federal, state, and local levels on public policy and regulatory matters that affect the company’s ability to conduct business and serve customers. The team includes six areas of practice: Federal Government Relations, State and Local Government Relations, Public Policy, Political Programs, and External Relations. Public Affairs Strategy & Transformation leads strategy, operating model, and cross-functional initiatives for Public Affairs. The team drives transformation, risk management, operational excellence and efficiency, while measuring progress against strategy, focusing resources, and defining success measures. Chief Communications Officer will lead internal and external communications for Wells Fargo, setting overall direction for communications while serving as a trusted advisor to the executive leadership team. In this role, he/she/they will also support senior corporate, business, and functional leaders in areas that include executive communications, media relations and employee communications. Additional responsibilities will include: Developing a fully integrated communications strategy for the bank and its five key lines of business that nurtures and protects the company’s reputation by reaching its many stakeholders in relevant and compelling ways. Also developing internal and external communications programs in support of the President/CEO and broader executive team. Ensuring that media relations are handled intelligently and with sophistication across all markets and channels. Counseling the senior team on media matters and serving as a key spokesperson for the company to the media and other external stakeholders. Maintaining a quick-response, 24/7, issues-management mechanism. Positioning Wells Fargo as a thought leader on industry issues and broader business and economic trends. Leading and inspiring a team of approximately 500 communications professionals with a commitment to their professional development and to setting a high bar for performance. Working in lockstep with peers in the Public Affairs organization and across the Enterprise to build Wells Fargo’s reputation and brand with all its key stakeholders – including employees, customers, industry analysts, partners, shareholders, government officials and regulatory agencies. In coordination with the Government Relations and Public Policy team, using targeted communications to help legislators and regulators better understand how Wells Fargo has evolved over the last few years - and, within that context, helping these constituents recognize the strategic importance of the company to U.S. economic development. In coordination with Investor Relations, as well as with the Social Impact & Sustainability and DE&I teams, helping to develop ongoing public company communications – from quarterly earnings to the annual report – and other key strategic documents such as the DE&I and ESG reports. Leading the Platform & Digital Services function, which includes digital signage, digital media, live event production, the employee portal, internal social publishing/distribution, analytics and other platform operations. Exploring and advancing emerging communications channels to engage for the future in more interactive and innovative ways with customers and employees of all generations. Developing measurement tools to monitor the impact of all internal and external communications activities and to assess media coverage. Approaching all responsibilities with a broad and deep understanding of Wells Fargo’s complex business and operational environment in order to help seize opportunities, anticipate unintended consequences and identify potential risk factors. The ideal candidate will have experience at scale in a regulated, public company environment, with Financial Services experience a significant advantage. He/She/They will possess a sophisticated understanding of the media, know how to engage employees and be capable of navigating in a large, complex, decentralized and highly visible organization. Has a broad range of top-tier print and broadcast media relationships and knows how to develop and maintain new relationships with key journalists over time. Keeps a keen eye out over the horizon for evolving issues and opportunities. Continuously monitors the overall risk landscape to manage reputational risk. Takes a disciplined approach, with a bias for planning and measurement. At the same time, makes good decisions with incomplete information. Operates with the highest integrity and ethical standards, treating others with respect and building relationships based on trust and mutual objectives. Strong leadership and collaboration skills – partners effectively with different groups and teams to deliver shared results. Required Qualifications 10 years of Public Relations, Media Relations or Corporate Communications experience, or equivalent demonstrated through one or a combination of the following: work experience, training, military experience, education. 5 years of management experience. Desired Qualifications Brings the full range of skills and attributes that make for a great communicator – from exceptional writing capabilities to an engaging and substantive interpersonal style. Able to work effectively at all levels of the media industry, from the most senior leaders at major print and broadcast outlets to the beat reporters who cover the company, the industry and the broader environment in which Wells Fargo does business. Fluent in understanding business financials and able to effectively translate business knowledge into communications solutions that support the business. Understands traditional and social media channels and can seize opportunities to facilitate awareness and growth. Has a strategic perspective while always keeping an eye on the details. A strong relationship builder with effective partnership skills who has worked effectively with C-suite executives. Remains calm under pressure and keeps others focused during periods of intensity and stress. Has an appropriate balance of confidence and humility. Listens.
