What are the responsibilities and job description for the Bus Attendant position at Baker School District?
The City of Baker School System seeks a Bus Attendant (6:00 a.m.-9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m.)
JOB GOAL: To provide assistance to the Bus Operator (Bus Driver) in providing safe transportation of special education students from their homes to their assigned schools and back home. The Bus Attendant (Special School Populations) must be punctual and present on the bus at all times when on the designated routes in order to assist the Bus Operator (Bus Driver) in furnishing safe transportation to and from school for the special education students that are assigned to their bus.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Bus Attendant (Special School Populations) is responsible for the following duties and responsibilities:
- Assists with the transportation of students at all times on and off the bus
- Assists special education and other students at all times while the bus is in transit
- Ensures that all protective safety devices are in use and are fastened properly
- Assists students on and off the bus at designated stops, when necessary, to assure safe entrances and exits to and from the bus
- Occupies a seat on the bus from which to easily assist the riders
- Attends all training sessions as required by the Supervisor of Student Support Services and The City of Baker School System
- Performs other related duties as assigned or required.
MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
The Bus Attendant (Special School Populations) should possess at least a high school diploma or equivalent. Ideally, Bus Attendants (Special School Populations) should have appropriate First Aid, CPR training, and other required trainings. The Bus Attendant (Special School Populations) shall meet all requirements found in Bulletin 119: Louisiana School Transportation Specifications and Procedures.
CONDITIONS
The Bus Attendant (Special School Populations) shall meet reasonable mental demands, physical demands, working conditions, and environmental conditions. In terms of physical demands, the Bus Attendant (Special School Populations):
- Possesses the physical ability to adequately perform all job responsibilities
- Assists special education and other students in boarding and exiting the bus
- Assists wheelchair bound students while on the bus
- Assists students with seat buckles
- Lifts to assist physically-challenged students
- Pushes, pulls, and reaches when necessary
- Assists, restrains, and comforts physically-challenged students to ensure their safety while on the bus

The Bus Attendant (Special School Populations) acknowledges that he or she is required to maintain a high standard of professional conduct. Breach of said professional conduct includes, but is not limited to, neglect of duty, dishonesty, and engagement in acts that are contrary to the City of Baker School System policy, unlawful activities, or any other conduct which is seriously prejudicial to the school system. In terms of professional traits, the Bus Attendant (Special School Populations) is poised, self-confident, enthusiastic, optimistic, punctual, dependable, unbiased, fair, flexible, handles confidential issues discreetly, attends work regularly and in a timely manner, dresses and behaves appropriately.
